LEWISTON - Two people died Monday morning in a violent crash on U.S. 95 near the Clearwater Casino.
It happened around 8:40. Idaho State Police says a 1999 Dodge Stratus was headed north when the driver apparently lost control. The car crossed the median, spun and flipped upside down in the southbound lane, where it was struck by a 2006 Ford F-250 pickup.
"There was an incredible amount of energy displaced when the Ford hit that car," said ISP Sgt. Kevin Rouse. "It's upside down and sliding and instantly, when it was hit by the pickup, it changed direction and the amount of force and energy involved was tremendous."
The passenger in the Stratus, 27-year-old Daniel Meninick of Lapwai, died at the scene. His sister, 18-year-old Temi Meninick, also of Lapwai, was driving. She died enroute to the hospital. Neither was wearing a seat belt according to ISP.
The driver of the pickup, 29-year-old Patrick Madden of Lewiston, was not injured.
"We're looking at speed as a factor," said Rouse. "Witnesses say they were being passed by the vehicle at 70-75 mph but did not see anything that indicated the car was having any problem."
The highway was closed while the crash scene was cleaned up and investigators gathered evidence.
