I think I am off the hook, he left out the part of his father being Navajo this time around.

started a topic side of the family.

    side of the family.

My paternal grandparents tried to teach me a little bit when I was a child. I was able to pick up a bit of the language and was given a couple of pieces of jewellery as heirlooms, but my father was quite abusive so I was taken away at a young age. He was in and out of jails for a few years and I quickly lost touch with that side of the family.

A few years ago I moved to Australia and got in touch with an auntie through Facebook. My grandparents are getting older and may not be around much longer. I feel like I will be losing a really important part of my life, but I’m very anxious about getting in touch with that side of the family again because of what I experienced early in my life. It is also hard to get in contact with anyone because of the distance and time difference.

I don’t want to lose what little I have learned of that part of me, but I also don’t feel as if I “belong” because I was raised by my white mother and feel culturally white. I would love to learn more of the language and be a part of something, but I don’t know how to start or if my dad’s side of the family would even be willing to help.

    My paternal grandparents...

My name is Anastasia Benson and I'm hoping to learn more about my Native Ancestry from my great grandmother's side of the family and gain a level of connection with that heritage. I'm also hoping to better understand the world from the Native point of view and have hopes of accurately depicting Native...

Hi everyone.... I joined PowWows.com in 2009 and haven't been on since 2010 (at least not posting, I've done alot of reading) so I know most of you don't know me. And I know alot of people on here don't care to know what I have to say because I'm white, and that's ok.

    There are many...

I tell you my story because I would honestly like some thoughtful feedback about this. Perhaps someone else has been in my situation and knows more about it...

My mother and father divorced when I was 9. Visitation was sporadic and by the time I was 15, I had a step-father and my birth...
