side of the family.
My paternal grandparents tried to teach me a little bit when I was a child. I was able to pick up a bit of the language and was given a couple of pieces of jewellery as heirlooms, but my father was quite abusive so I was taken away at a young age. He was in and out of jails for a few years and I quickly lost touch with that side of the family.
A few years ago I moved to Australia and got in touch with an auntie through Facebook. My grandparents are getting older and may not be around much longer. I feel like I will be losing a really important part of my life, but I’m very anxious about getting in touch with that side of the family again because of what I experienced early in my life. It is also hard to get in contact with anyone because of the distance and time difference.
I don’t want to lose what little I have learned of that part of me, but I also don’t feel as if I “belong” because I was raised by my white mother and feel culturally white. I would love to learn more of the language and be a part of something, but I don’t know how to start or if my dad’s side of the family would even be willing to help.Tags: None
