Columbus Day

[email protected], you know, I remember in elementary school, there was a whole big shin dig about the Columbus Day thing. Surely the teachings depicted an event of this countries history, but tainted would be being nice. It was so sugar coated and misleading; it was only till I got older that I began to realize what a bunch of shullbit it was! Same with Thanksgiving Day. White people get together once a year and eat, while the Nativez get together every weekend or at every gathering and eat and what not, whatever.

What a bunch of old world crap, Columbus Day.

We did a protest in Lawrence Kansas and it was small but dang we must've ruffled some feathers because the locals are commenting on how "ndns need to get over it..our how w/ out colonization ndns would be in the ice age..or how we didnt even have the wheel, gun powder..blah,blah,blah..and the article is very vague..it doesnt explain or tell the full truth..like it leaves out how "they brought us this far" was meant by Derrick Brown, he's my class mate and he was explaining how the europeans were living in horrible conditions, very oppressed..I mean..its an article that is just nice and "nuetral"..however it is biased and white-washed because it calls this place..the indigenous lands of our peoples ..the "new world"..as if there was no world until it was colonized. anyway check it out..I was ONE OF the MANY people who helped organize the event..I think the article also may have wanted to create "in-fighting" w/ in our groups because they made Derrick sound like "HE" did everything when we know its not true and he NEVER MADE it sound like that..crazy wayzz...media can do alot YO!..oh sorry i didnt do spell check so exsqueeze my typos

BTW I have mondays off, and it sucks that the bank is closed on this greatest of explorer days, so it costs me an extra $7 to cash my paycheck so I can put my affairs in order. I wish I could go back in time and sail a pirate ship to intercept the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, throw the goons to the fish and tell the old world that the new world is off limits under penalty of a personal discovery of the Creator.

FYI, Thanks to the late, former Governor Mickelson, South Dakota does not recognize Columbus day, but instead celebrates that day as Native American Day across the state, and all state employees, including the schools, observe it with a day off. There are also several events held across the state that preceeding weekend, including the He Sapa Wacipi in Rapid City, that provide education and a chance for Native people to celebrate their history and culture. Prett decent step forward....

There is also a very small town in NW Nebraska, Chadron, in a pretty well known racist corner of HELL, that does proclaim Columbus day changed to Native American Day, they make that proclamation every year with a nice ceremony. Another decent step....

These two changes aren't going to change the world, and they are not just meaningless gestures, but true steps of progress....we should all applaud these efforts at the same time that we call for more and more changes.....

First and foremost it is important to start telling/teaching the truth in schools.
(in an age appropriate way of course, we don't need to be too gory with the kindergardners....)

Second- instead of "celebrating" the "discovery" of America do it more like a Memorial to fallen ancestors... similar to the holiday of 9/11, veterans day or ...memorial day.

where I live the non-indian parents would teach the same lies that they were taught- Columbus was a brave hero that crossed the ocean and faced brutal savages...
and when the schools continue to teach the "official history" there will be no one to stand up and say "yes, it was the start of the colonization of europeans AND it was the start of the genocide against the native tribes" because all the indian chidren have skipped school.
I respectfully play the devils advocate and say native americans need more of a voice to set things straight. each year, a little more and more the media suggests that there is a different side of the "official history" each more the protests of Indian groups get more attention. to get rid of the holdiay would get rid of the opportunity to set things striaght, tell the truth, and honor the dead. we can use the holiday, reshape it, one day re-name it

Anyhow, I guess I never thought of it that way but good point. I say "us parents" because I realize that I can only tell my children about their history. True it would be nice to march into their schools and lay down the attrocities incurred and untruths told of the federal governments Indian policies, but that, I'm afraid, is not possible. Nor is expecting the schools to do the same.

Still, getting rid of it totally would speak a million words; celebrating a more worthy cause would do justice, like Custer's Last Stand Day!

I don't know, I think holidays should celebrate a happy occasion; looking back at our history there only seems to be things that suck, and celebrating or "remebering" things that suck kinda sucks!

Strange day to have a powwow but if people are powwowin' and havin' fun, who are we to condone their good times!

The only thing that sounds like is missing from this powwow is a smoked out drum circle! That would top it off nicely! jks
