  • The Heart

    The heart knows only love.
But with age it learns pain,
    rejection,
    sadness,
    and hate.

    When we are hurt,
    the heart closes up
    and seals its self away.

And that is how the heart protects.
    It wishes not to hurt.
    Not to hate.
    Or feel sadness,
    or rejection.

It wishes to know only love.
    Unconditional love.
    True love.
Because the heart itself is only love.

And the heart, as wonderful as it is,
can unlearn the pain, hate, sadness and rejection.
    It can mend and repair
and love unconditional once again as it was intended to do.

I think of the wounds and of healing them as I read this prose. Thank you for causing that reflection with your words.

It is what it is. I am who I am. I say what I say. I think what I think. I love what I love.

WOW, this is really good! I love the way you have your stanzas and how right at the climactic stanza (next to the last), each line ends with love, love, love, love. It really hits your last stanza home. That was really difficult to write like that, but the whole poem sort of feels like it was penned to the beat of a heart. I read it out loud and could really hear it.

                  It's awesome!

Thank you so much. I'm glad you like it. This is one of my favorite poems I've written.

I was honored to have dinner and listen to Nick Sparks speak tonight at UNCP. He is the author of "The Notebook" and "A Walk to Remember". It was an even bigger honor when I was asked to give the benediction/prayer before we ate.
