Marijuana may spur new brain cells

    By STEVE MITCHELL
WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Scientists said Thursday that marijuana appears to promote the development of new brain cells in rats and have anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects, a finding that could have an impact on the national debate over medical uses of the drug.

Other illegal and legal drugs, including opiates, alcohol, nicotine and cocaine, have been shown to suppress the formation of new brain cells when used chronically, but marijuana's effect on that process was uncertain.

Now, a team led by Xia Zhang of the department of psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon may have found evidence the drug spurs new brain cells to form in a region of the brain called the hippocampus, and this in turn reduces anxiety and depression.

Marijuana appears "to be the only illicit drug whose capacity to produce increased ... neurons is positively correlated with its (anti-anxiety) and anti-depressant-like effects," Zhang and colleagues wrote in the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. The paper was posted online Thursday.

In the study, rats were given injections of HU210 -- a synthesized version of a cannabinoid chemical found in marijuana -- twice per day for 10 days.

Zhang told United Press International this would be "a high dose" of smoked marijuana, but he added he is not certain how many equivalent joints it would take or whether patients now using the drug typically would be getting this much HU210.

Although HU210 was injected, Zhang said there would be no difference if it was obtained by smoking marijuana.

The rats showed evidence of new neurons in the hippocampus dentate gyrus, a region of the brain that plays a role in developing memories.

Zhang's team suspected the new brain cells also might be associated with a reduction in anxiety and depression, because previous studies had indicated medications used to treat anxiety and depression achieve their effect this way.

To find out, they treated rats with HU210 for 10 days and then tested them one month later. When placed in a new environment, the rats were quicker to eat their food than rats that did not receive the compound, which suggested there was a reduction in anxiety behaviors.

Another group of rats treated with HU210 showed a reduction in the duration of immobility in a forced swimming test, which is an indication the compound had an anti-depressant effect.

Asked how he thought the findings might impact the debate over using marijuana to treat medical conditions, Zhang said, "Our results indicate cannabinoids could be used for the treatment of anxiety and depression."

He added that his view is "marijuana should be used as alcohol or nicotine," noting "it has been used for treating various diseases for years in other countries."

Last June the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-3 that the federal ban on marijuana supersedes the laws of certain states that allow the substance to be used for medicinal purposes, such as the treatment of pain, nausea in cancer patients and glaucoma. Eleven states have passed laws legalizing marijuana use by patients with a doctor's approval, including California, Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

The Bush administration, through the Department of Justice's Drug Enforcement Agency, began conducting raids in California in 2001 on patients using marijuana. Two of those arrested by the DEA -- Angel Raich, who suffers from brain cancer, and Diane Monson, who used the drug to help alleviate chronic back pain -- sued Attorney General John Ashcroft, requesting a court order to be allowed to grow and smoke marijuana, which led to the Supreme Court decision.

Paul Armentano, senior policy analyst with the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, told UPI he thought the findings "would have a positive impact on moving forward this debate, because it is giving ... a scientific explanation that further supports long-observed anecdotal evidence, and further lends itself to the notion that marijuana, unlike so many other prescription drugs and controlled substances, appears to have incredibly low toxicity and as a result lacks potential harm to the brain that many of these drugs have."

The DEA Web site, however, contends that "marijuana is a dangerous, addictive drug that poses significant health threats to users," including cancer and impaired mental functioning.

Armentano said this is a distortion of what scientific studies actually show. Studies in animals indicate marijuana actually may protect against many forms of cancer, rather than cause the disease, he said. In addition, studies in marijuana smokers have found little evidence of cognitive deficits, and even when they do, the defects disappear if the person stops smoking for 30 days.

"What? What are we talking about? What do you mean I just cut my arm off in the machine?"

If I go to work high, me or someone(s) I work with WILL die or be permanently maimed. I had a friend who is UAW and he has seen people reduced to puddles in stamping presses when they were sober, and he's got some pretty bad stories about the people that were high too.

While I'm in the thread I'll vent on something else: I know a guy who, along with his friend, was brutally murdered while they were camping on his property. Some drug deal was going down and they saw the tents so they stabbed, wrapped in sleeping bags, and dumped their bodies in the Ohio River.

P.S. His family is now in shambles and his little brother, a kid I was sort of a mentor for, is highly unstable. I think we need to have real punishment for drug offenders.

I have an ex-freind who is 37 and she still does it. She is so stupid and acts like she is still in high school. The sad thing is, she has two kids that are teens and they know she does it. Shes so stoned that she doesnt believe they know. Its very sad to see people abuse. Andre, that was a rough story, very sad.

I don't understand everything I'm hearing. Like anything, if you do it too much it can hurt. Eating too much with no exercise is hurting our children. I don't thing the author meant to go our and smoke a bag a day. Our people have used fasting, dancing, and plants to help us reach the spirit world. Not too much different than the proper religions. Natives in the past didn't sit around the fire smoking and getting hi all the time. People are abusing beer, legal meds, tobacco, you name it. Our people used the our plant brothers for healing, vision quest, quidance from the spirits in time of need. I am in law enforcement and the military, since it is against the law I can use it. But if it were legalized, I would us it for ceremonies. A friend of mine did take the Marine Corps to court to use pyote in ceremonies and won. We all have seen friends get hurt on the job both sober and hi. Friends have car accidents both sober and hi. People take medicine that says don't drive or use heavy equipment but still do because they must work to pay bills. That just takes common sence. Don't take it away because some don't know how to control themselves. It that were true, we would do away with alot more of our lives. Use must be controlled just like drinking. It you do it on the job, you get fired. If you drive while using, you go to jail. Punish the deserving. Follow the elders, they did it to reach a higher place, they weren't potheads.

I agree with you. There is a difference between use and abuse. The people who use marijuana for pain control do so because nothing else helps. It has also been used to control seizures for those with severe seizure disorders. It can be used like any prescription drug, but even those are misused and abused.

I agree. There is a difference between use and abuse. The people who use marijuana for pain control do so because nothing else helps. I had a doctor who would have prescribed it for me if it was legal in Michigan. Marijuana had also been used to control seizures in those with severe seizure disorders. Marijuana can be used like any prescription medicine, but even those are misused and abused.

Yeah cause they did'nt smoke the stuff. Marijuana is not indigenous to this continent. It was brought over by the europeans.
Now my people are known as the people of the shirt but also as the people of the wild hemp or hemp gatherers depending on who tells it... and this has been argument before that my people cultivated marijuana, but the HEMP we used is actually dogbane. Hemp's a loose word for vegetable fiber.

When I first read the title, I wondered where it would go...

Years ago when I was a pot head, it started to make me feel really paranoid! I didn't like the effect it had on me, got the munchies too much, and also thirstier than heck!!! Squinty eyes, driving slow, etc.....I wouldn't smoke it unless I was authorized to as in pain med. and I hope I never get there!

No disrespect was intended to anyone. When I refer to the old ones using various plants to reach the spirit world, to seek visions, Marijuana wasn't the only thing I was refering to. Various tribal people from North America, South America, Africa, etc., used our plant brothers for vision quest, healing, finding answers from the spirits. All I'm trying to say is the plants are not evil, it's how we use and/or abuse them. I don't know if marijuana will help brain cells or not. All I know is I want to walk the good path and accept what others feel is right for them. Again, if you use/drink and drive-go to jail. If you use/drink to escape live and your responiblities-seek help. So on and so forth.

I know you did'nt mean any disrespect and I was'nt implying you did either Chickendad... only wanting to point out that it was'nt pot they were smokin' in those pipes. I believe tobacco and Kinnickkinnick (bearberry) were the only things smoked on any regular basis.
