The biggest bit of advice I can give you is EXERCISE!!! Exercise will help your body burn up the extra sugar in your body. Next of course would be diet, eat plenty of fruits and veggies. The more dietary fiber in your diet the better... have you talked to a dietician about reading food labels?? A good dietician can help you with how to eat better. I was told to drink plenty of water, as well as get my weight down a little. My A1C has been running right around 6.4 to 6.7, stress can be a factor to watch out for too! Stress will reek havoc with your blood sugars if you let it. Good luck!!

Oh yeah... do an online search for recipes that will help you control your diabetes. There are plenty of websites that can help.

Just Became Diabetic in January 2009 BL.Sugar was 781

yes I have been to the doctor, went to one of those diet and infomational class's they have. That was very helpful. But the problem I have is my feet an ankles are swelling alot and it becomes darn painfull. I think that may be a circulation thing cause I somke cigerettes. Anyhoo I opened up this disscussion thread to see if others wanted to put their issues. For instance I can not stand splenda I hate it so I use real sugar but just cut way down. after a long time of doing this your tasted buds dont require tons of sugar I can get away with using 1 teaspoon to my cereal. My son is a serious diabetic who has to go to Dialysis three time a week. I almost lost him last year. All because he didn't take care of himself and he admits it now.

I lost my sister a year ago in march due to diabetes... she never recovered from double kidney transplant. I can understand what you are you saying about your son.

Have you been checked for congestive heart failure??? My Dad suffered from it, he took water pills to keep the swelling down.

People that are diabetic I gues have to deal with things going wacky at any given time no matter if they are compulsive about their management. I know people deal with their problem in many ways and like you mentioed about the heart, thanks for the sugestion. but seriously I think I need to stop smoking. Thats why I put this up because people go to there doctors and find things that work for them. Maybe through this thread others can express what and how comapre notes. If it can help to save a life great. I in no way recomend people trying anything without talking to their doctor I hope that is understood.
I really had a heck of a time finding recipes. I was living on chicken veggies and potatoes. for weeks LOL cause no one told me crap when I left the hospital. Things like what is a good snack to eat before you go to bed so that your blood sugars dont go to low over night. stuff like that. I take nova log and metforman pill. but I gues it's a lot to do with the way you eat. It just sucks I don't like it.

You're right... it's a real pain in the ***!! LOL I like the idea of your thread, way to many NDNs runnin around with diabetes. I was scared to eat when I found out I was diabetic, as well as high triglycerides. I try and eat right, and teach my little ones about eating right. I eat a heck of a lot more veggies than I ever did before. I love broccoli!! A little too much if you ask my kids!! LOL

OMG for real... It seems like it's on an epepdemic level

I have tried every sweetner there is, so what I use now is honey, and real sugar, not sugar made out of beets. Have not tried Stevia. I do use the splenda brown sugar for right now. I want to try and use maple sugar to replace the brown. Yeah my son told me "Ma you my as well become a vegetarian. But how long can that last. I love all veggies but not that much in meal after meal. I was told by my cuz and other people that this would be the cure or at least help. Excercise is something that is a problem for me I have realy bad knees. I love to go walking out in the woos my ol man makes fun of me cuz I am slow like a turtle well he isn't any better. were both in our late 50's. My big hang up is I love sweets it is sooooooooooooo hard. do you think your children may be diabetic one day? or does this skip generations?

Diabetes is not picky as to who it claims... I hope like heck my kids don't get it! There are plenty of alternatives so far as diet goes. Most doctors will tell you allow yourself a small treat every once in awhile... other wise you end up binging. My dietician told me that a diabetic can eat anything they want... in moderation. I love my sweets too!!! Most times I can be good sometimes a little naughty!! This is me sometimes! LOL

Hey there! Just want to ask you a question. Did you ever drink a bear root tea? The circulation will change big time with that, you will get a lot more cleansing that way for your WHOLE system than you expect.
SO to make the tea, take one big chunk of bear root, that is about the size of a carrot, bash it up, if you have a food processor grind the heck out of it!
Then take a 2 quart pot and add water, then toss in the powder or pieces. Bring to a simmer and let it simmer till the water turns dark and the stuff becomes mushy. Strain the solids out after about ten minutes. Then pour into a cup and drink like a tea.

Warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not take this tooooooooo much, it thins the blood as well.
But to the cleansing. It improves the flow of blood, cleans all the organs like the kidneys, liver, spleen and gal blader to name a few. With all this happening it will change your blood and purify that too. The oxygen levels change in your lungs too. Even if you are a smoker you will feel the changes.

Now comes the kicker that most people do not even realize... your appetite changes too.
When bears eat bear root or Osha they are just coming out of hibernation and their system that has been shut down for months is full of toxins that need to be purged. So the bear now searches out and eat pounds of the stuff raw and full of sap. Whitin hours the bear changes and gets a real appetite and eats and drinks to cleanse the system. The water level in the bear climbs as he drinks a lot of liquids after the feast of root and plant alike. Once he starts this you can see that the bear will roam for food too! Once he eats, that helps again to cleanse the system of the toxins that have been dormant within its body all the months it was hibernating.
For the Diabetes there is a natural cure for that too, my adopted uncle is now using this and yes he adores his sweets too! Now he eats what he wants and when he wants. He is pretty darn stable. I do not have any of the info other than the person makiing this med is south of the 49th parrallell, he did not tell me more yet! I will keep you posted when I find out more!
Listen to my heart, not just my mouth! The most powerfull thing we can do is,,,share,,, if we don't it dies with us.

It is the year of the bear, I am sharpening my claws and will no longer tollerate harrassment.

                    Thanks Tibiki Kinew

I have thought of listing some herbal stuff but, I don't want people to get the idea that I am a specialist in this area cause I am NOT. I use many old remidies passed down through my family, and this man Lester even sent me some tea that is like a all over cure for Artheritis, and similar to what you mention the tribes use it alot in Arizona, darn I wish I could remember what it was called it was advertized a lot back a few years. It never hurts to check out natures natural cures. I do use a lot of teas when I get sick I swear by pennyroyal when I have a real bad cold, I use ginger root for indigestion.
As for a total cure a alone I would say if that works for this person great. But some people can not do this cause I believe they waited to long and their diabetis has progressed to the stage of having to take insulin. Now If I had been doing all the right things prior to me becoming diabetic I have no doubt it would work. I just hate being diabetic. It scares the crap out of me.

Self Control I keep telling myself

Well i messed up and over did it but not to bad. Sugars went to 181. I wont let this happen again. but I am new to this so I know now never to eat magic bars you know the ones that are from the box by eagle brand milk. OMG I only had two of them. My son told me if you have a history letting your blood sugars getting reall high on a steady basis you are in for trouble I don't doubt this because now he is on dyalasis (sic) my spell check dont work for some odd reason. I was just wondering if there was any one out there that ever had a kidney transplant. Looking for some insight to what that is all about?

The guy I mentioned was giving himself needles twice a day! He no longer needs the insulin.
As for the kidney, I have had severe stones in 2004 where I could not even crawl to the bathroom any more, it was that painful. As per a nurse that talked to me about this, her words were, it is worse than childbirth! So saying that, there is a sweet cure to get rid of those nasty stones that build up in your kidneys and in the gall blader. The main ingredient is the root of the birch tree. Yep! You need about 16 inches of it in length and about 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Take the root from a tree in spring when the sap is reallllly flowing. with a hand brush you can wash the dirt off and then let it dry. When you realize that some one has these problems make a stock pot of one gallon of water with this root piece, bring to a boil and add the same amount of Osha (bear root). Drink this brew of two roots for the whole month and replace the water each time you take a cup full out. You will be amazed that in about 1 week you will not only feel the difference but the doctors will see the difference on an xray!
Like I said in 2004 I was filled with stones, after 1 week I was called back to the doctors office to see if the swelling was down enough to operate me. I had been given this brew and took it faithfully, the stones were all gone!!!! The doctor made me take 2 sets of xrays because the thought the first set were wrong!
To make things understandable, the birch tree, is the only tree here on mother earth that can live in solid rock. The sap of this tree is capable of disolving the hardest rocks and makes a home for itself even in the side of cliffs. The next time you go out, take a peek! Then see what has happened to the rock, then see what new life form has taken root there along with the birch tree!
Listen to my heart, not just my mouth! The most powerfull thing we can do is,,,share,,, if we don't it dies with us.

Well, it's good that you're cutting back on bad foods, but you gotta cut out the sugar and high carb food. I'm glad the ADA is finally taking this stance because for the longest time they still pushed pasta and potatoes and other starches, and said go ahead and eat sugar...just inject more insulin.

My dad had diabetes for years and finally succombed following the ADA guidelines back then. Of course he suffered all along the way.

Here's a great article, The Cure For Diabetes - Men's Health

In the RECIPE section I've posted a lot of low carb recipes that you might want to try. Just remember to cut out flour, potatoes, rice, corn, and high carb fruits. Lots of people are like, "Geez, what will I eat then??" But there are lots of choices with all kinds of meat and fish, eggs and cheese, cream and olive oil, and veggies galore. Even berries and melons and some other lower carb fruits. And butter and nuts and .... I'll think of more.

If you get a book like Protein Power or Atkins, they have whole chapters on diabetes, and it's a great way of eating. I avoid all the Atkins branded stuff, like the bars and drinks (although I used to LOVE the Atkins Cafe Au Lait shakes before they discontinued then), and just eat REAL food.

I'm curious what is it that you're eating, or drinking, that you still need a sweetener? I'm trying to avoid Splenda, especially the bulk and packets with all that nasty malto dextrose. The DaVinci and Torani sugar free coffee syrups are great if you need a little sweetness and flavor.

I haven't tried the new stevia - Truvia, which is made from stevia and erithritol - both all natural and the erithritol is the ONLY sugar alcohol that doesn't cause intestinal distress. But I heard it's really good. Erithritol is also marketed alone as ZSweet which is good if you miss a little sugar sprinkled on your strawberries, or whatever. Not quite as sweet as sugar, but so close. It's good in bulk form for baking as well.

Actually the best results are mixing various sugar substitutes, especially in baking.

                            Typical day:
Breakfast: eggs and sausage or veggie/cheese omelet
Snack: berries with cottage cheese or melon smoothie
Lunch: taco salad with fried low carb tortilla "chips", or black soy bean chili with almond meal "cornbread"
                            Snack: jerky and nuts
Dinner: grilled meat with mashed cauliflower and cream gravy, green beans or chicken in alfredo sauce over steamed broccoli, cauliflower, carrot mix
Dessert: one minute chocolate cake or key lime mousse

Most all those recipes are in the RECIPE Forum, but I can post links if you'd like.
                            ...it is what it is...
