It should be worth noting that the drug ephedra, derived from the Chinese herb ma huang, was controversial for several years and has apparently been prohibited just recently. Many dietary supplements aimed at weight loss were made with ephedra or ma huang, including one of Herbalife's main products and products that you used to be able to buy at GNC and other health food stores. The herb dialates the bronchial tubes to promote free breathing, which is why pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (marketed as Sudafed and others) is sold as cough medicine. It also stimulates the metabolism, which is why it has been sold as a "thermogenesis" supplement to burn fat.

Several years ago, a teenager died after taking an overdose of Herbal Ecstacy (a ma huang based herbal alternative to "speed"), fueling the controversy over the safety of ma huang that led to the apparent ban. AMP-II Drops have been sold by recruited MLM independent distributors through person-to-person marketing and as energy additives at many espresso stands.

    The Keystone Campaign
    by CaudwellianDialect

    A classic case of this...
