  • Gastric Bypass????

I have a friend in Chicago that is going under preliminary testing to have a gastric bypass so she can lose weight and be able to get read of her trac (breathing tube) hopefully.

Have any of you had bypass surgery or know someone that has?

I have done some reading and have found out there are more that one type of surgery... some safer than others. They now have what they call a mini bypass. Anyone know about these?

I have heard alot of negative about it as well as seen the positive...... just wondering what you all thought. Would you do it?

Well you will definately lose weight thats for sure but your whole lifestyle is changed forever and there are complications but it mostly depends on the committment of the person who has it done. A person committed to living the lifestyle usually experiences less problems than people who are not. Im sure you and your friend already researched the problems associated with it. Its definately not a choice decided on a whim.

Gosh, I hope she's tried all the other options before deciding on surgery (including Atkins). Half our employees are on Atkins or other low carb diets and it really works.

At the other school down the road, bypasses must have been "the thing" a few years ago. Not to mention that it costs like $40,000. But only 2 of the 3 people had good results. One relapsed and can eat as much as she ever could and is fat again. One had complications and is having surgery again to repair it. The other looks great until you see her ankles. I think she lost weight so fast that her skin just sagged around her ankles. But I'm sure that's the least of her worries.
      ...it is what it is...

Ewww this is nasty. I would recommend it only if that's the ONLY way you can lose weight. One of my best friends had this done, she was about 350 lbs at 5'6. She decided to have it done but the doc put her on a diet and walking program. This girl lost 30 lbs doing that. What pi$$es me off is that she should have continued with it because it was working. But she had the surgery done. Her skin is saggy as hell. She just had a breast reduction and lift last week because she said her breasts looked like two empty balloons just hanging down to her belly button. Her arms and legs have huge flaps of skin hanging. Her hair fell out and her teeth were rotting because of not having any vitamins or nutrients because she could not keep her two teaspoons of food down. This is happening with most everyone I know who's had it done. Seems like their health just fails after a while. Sure being thin must be thrilling enough to do it but seems like they don't look at the whole picture, maybe thinking those side effects won't happen to them. My friend IS doing good now, but she suffered for such a long time. I'm glad she was mad at herself for getting it done, after seeing how much she accomplished just eating right and working out. She went thru about two years of hell just to be thin. Dang. My other childhood friend's mom is bedridden right now because of her being so sick from having this operation. It's just too risky.

Ok, I have to say these quick fixes that people love so much on weight loss drives me nuts. Yes, it's easy to do and yes some people need to have the surgery because of some genetic thing. However, I think surgery, Atkins or any other fad diet is the worst thing for a person. It doesn't teach a person proper nutrition or proper portions. It's an easy and unhealthy way to lose weight. The reason many people (not all) are overweight is because of overeating and a non-active life.
I gained 60 lbs, and lost it (not all at once, but about 4 lbs. a month--the normal, healthy way). A person doesn't gain all their weight at once and people need to be patient with their weight loss. Forget these stupid fad diets (especially Atkins). Learn proper nutrition, portions and get that booty moving.

(ok, doing jumping jacks off the soap box)
Dayum, I think I need to go write a paper or something. Oh wait, classes are done.

No kidding, I would rather be fat and work it off then get this major surgery and be unhealthy afterwards.

I've heard nothing but horrible things about this, as well witnessed.
Although the chances decrease if you properly follow guidelines post surgery, there is no guarantee that you will be able to continue living a healthy and active lifestyle.

A friend of mine went through with the surgery after many consultations. To this day (3 years later), she is still unbelievably skinny that people stare, make comments, and automatically assume she has anorexia, or some eating disorder. Sadly, at a point in her life she did have an over-eating problem, continues too. Reason: Not being taught a new lifestyle change to healthy eating and living.

In the end, after all these years...she wishes that she would have not gone through with the surgery, instead of worked on will power and self esteem to movitate herself to get to the gym, or even to walk in public without worrying about people 'laughing' at her cuz she was attempting some sort of exercise.

As for myself, although a 'quick fix' would be nice. It's not reality. Yes I am overweight, however getting to the gym 3 times a week is pleasurable for me. I may not be losing weight at 2-5 pounds per week, but at least I'm making an honest effort to continue a healthy life.

A person can be overweight @ 250 pounds, and be healthier than a person who is 130 pounds. I think it's probably a matter of exercise.

My lil sister weighs about 210 and with energy, health, sports, etc. She's more physically fit than girls who play on the same sports teams she does. Who weight 130.

              Now...Atkins plan....that's a whole other thread!

(I responded to this fast, there is probably typos)

I think Anna Nicole is bullshyttin about losing 70+ lbs off a pill. I saw her on TV today, man she is majorly skinny, not even thin, just plain skinny. Although she did look like she had some muscle tone in her shoulders. I think she's probably got a chef and a trainer cuz dang, that pill just worked too well for her huh?

Well, if excess weight didn't cause so many health problems, I wouldn't even worry about it. When I got serious about losing I started eating "right" (low-fat) and worked out at the gym every day for 6 months. I didn't lose an ounce!

Everybody's body is different, but LOW CARB eating has been the thing for me, and apparently lots of other people. Indians have been eating low carb for millenia, except for the tribes with corn and beans I guess.

I read Protein Power and the Atkins books and they have some really good things to say. Eating more veggies and fruits are the main thing. Few people realize that Atkins requires you to eat 3 cups of veggies a day during the intial two weeks of induction and more after that. And you need adequate protein so you don't lose muscle mass as you lose weight. And your body needs the 'good' fats, and Atkins is refining their approach for less saturated fats and more along the lines of olive oil.

Following the low carb way of eating has allowed me to lose 50+ pounds and kept it off for 1 year and 1/2 now. I still have a ways to go, so I'm doing induction again. Those 1 carb Hershey bars are the incentive I need. :p

I agree, everyone is different, but I still don't believe in this whole "low-carb" fad as it doesn't teach people lifetime healthy eating habits. I'll be starting an Atkins/Low-Carb thread since this is the surgery thread and I started the rant on the wrong topic. LOL.

Oh, low fat does not equal low calorie. Once again, does not teach proper nutrition.

                            One other really bad misconception.
If you eat like a bird, you will lose weight!
Well of course, cuz your body goes into starvation mode and eats up all that stored fat from a big juicy hamburger and fries you ate lastweek. It may sound good, but it's a Bad thing!!!

If you eat only fresh veggies, fruit, "low-fat" and "light" products...you may lose, however there are the 4 food groups for a reason. You need to feed your body, and most importantly your brain.

I'm still slowly learning, it does take awhile but it is something that interests me. I notice what I eat more, as well as others around me. But don't get me wrong...I don't follow things to a "T"...if I did, I'm sure I wouldn't be overweight.
It's hard to pass up a good visit to Dairy Queen with peeps, but I'll still enjoy some ice cream. Not to mention, eating out!

My hardest time to healthy eating is on weekends. During the week is fine. I drink my 8 glasses of H20, eat well...but the weekend comes...that's a whole other story! lol
