Reservations called breeding ground for meth
    Monday, November 8, 2004

Reservations are facing a new threat from a cheap and easy to make drug, Sioux activist Jean Mahomni Mani says.

Mani says methamphetamine has invaded the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. So she has started to work with a statewide coalition to make people aware of the dangerous drug.

Last year, 38 meth labs were found in the state. Neighboring North Dakota had 235 last year while Iowa had 1,240.

                Recovered Meth User and Abuser

I know from my own bad personal experience that Meth is truly the DEVIL DRUG of the CENTURY, perhaps of all time. My the Great Spirit help us all, protect, give us strength and help us to get back on the Red Road of sobriety, wellness, and strength. And No, I didn't need to go to AA or NA for that statement. It is how my heart feels.

I know, I survived my addiction by remembering the old ways that my grandmother had taught me. I know it was my cultural, traditional teachings that brought me out of that Demon World. But, like many others, I fell into that world as a co-dependant woman. I needed to try and keep up with my man. But, somehow, I found the strength to stand up on my own to feet and start walking away from it all. Yes, I left A LOT behind, a home, finacial security, a nice TRUCK, AYE! and yes, my relationship, which for the most part I loved!!!!! It was very hard, but I am alive and well today! I know I owe a lot for this life that I now have and I am very grateful.

As a girl, I once attended a Youth/Elder Workshop where the youth and the elders talked of many things in life, one of those things was use and abuses. The workshop was differently, excellent! Different than any other program/event that I had ever been a part of. It was like no other "Guidance" experience; it was based on a talking circle format/way. The talk was strong, heartfelt, deep and very cleansing. I remember that experience fondly and have continiously wished to attend another such circle.

But back then, the main substance abused was alcohol. Still, I believe, what ever substance is used it destroys lives. VERY SADLY! A lot of people pay, not just the user and abuser; our families suffer! How many of us know that, yet the cycles continue. May the Great Spirit guide our people to help themselves find a good balanced life again, to walk the Red Road, the time is coming that we must as a people make some choices. We must fight this Demon and make it go away from our people.

                Respectfully submitted.

                      I appreciate your input

I truly appreciate your input, even though it is not a very nice subject matter to discuss. I believe that words are power, and the more words that are spoken about these varied and multiple substance use and abuse problems, the more we as a people can and will win! Win the war against the substance and all of those other ugly social diseases that have plagued our people long enough.

I know that we must think carefully before we speak, for the enemy is big. The words that we speak must come from our heart's, but we must also remember to use our brain's in order to speak the right words. The Creator blessed us with both, brain and heart, in addition to our soul and memories. I believe, if we utilize all those blessing/gifts in a good way/the right the enemy can be overcome.

Many of you out there are blessed as medicine people, you come from a line that we as an Indian Nation should and must call upon. You have the strength, power and ability to help us fight all the ugly demons, devils, and monsters that now plague our world. Please, somehow, somewhere, sometime may we come together as a strong army, willing to defend our people's spirits, lives, and future.

My major in Health promotion and wellness, my dream is to open a center for the youth to come and discover that they can make choices, they can choose their destiny, that the cycles can be broken. I do try and look forward, toward a brighter future for our people! One that we can rest assured; knowing that our future generations will live happily and grow contently. A future sustained by pray, hard work, and our fight. Please remember to pray for strength, wisdom, and guidance, so that our people can prosper and live good lives.

We, the Indian Nation have endured, persevered, and survived. We are a strong people, we CAN, we WILL, we are MIGHTY. Please just remember that in our prayers.

                      Respectfully submitted,
                      D Star

for more info on meth, please see my stuff over in the 'Health' postings.
Oxycodone is an opioid of the morphine-type with a legitimate use in pain control. However, it has become a favored narcotic by addicts as it can be crushed, chewed, snorted, or injected once dissolved . Because changing the form of the drug results in what we call uncontrolled delivery it poses a significant health risk to the abuser resulting in overdose.
