  • Racist cartoon

    Hey Everyone!

I was fowarded this cartoon before the holidays, and I wanted to share it with everyone here (anyone who will read). (see attachment) It is depicting one of the two biggest rivals in florida college sports, the gators and FSU. I am flabbergasted at the obvious racist position this particular editorial is taking. I mean does the editor actually read or edit before hand. There would be no way that any other race would be depicted in such a manner and the caption with it. there would be no way!
Secondly to make a mockery of killing Native people is abominable! People are so uneducated to the fact the over 30% of hate crimes are directed towards Native Americans. That is rather large considering Natives only represent 1% of the entire population. And in the end these crimes either go unsolved or unpunished.
What the [email protected]*&! I am so tired of stupid people.
    Thanks for letting me vent.
I personally am writing letters to UF's (University of Florida, gators) president, board of trustees, the Independent Florida Alligator, etc...
I welcome and encourage anyone else to do the same. They need to know that this just doesnt effect Florida but is directed at all Native people.

    I have emails and addresses:
    The Independent Florida Alligator
    Editor: Miki Gimignani, [email protected]
Graphics Chief: Michelle Stewart, [email protected]
    Manager..: C.E. Barber, [email protected]

    UF President
    J. Benard Machen
    Office of the President
    226 Tigert Hall
    Po Box 113150
    Gainesville, Fl. 32611
    [email protected]

If you go to the uf website, www.ufl.edu, you can get the address of the board of trustees.

If cant read the caption it states: "Sorry Albert but It's Culturally Insensitive to Kill a Native American this close to Thanksgiving."

Sorry it hurts so much. Until everyone is willing to sit at the circle it will be this way. Education and time is the only answer. Things do keep getting better. Look back 50 or more years ago and it was worst. I look to my kids and their kids to be the ones who will finally end this madness. For now we must endure and teach.

I got a reply from the General Manager from the paper. Of course she gave the run around.
Here is a copy of the email:

          Dear Ms. Narcomey,

Thank you for sharing your views. Since the student editors at The
Alligator are the only ones in control of news and editorial content, I am taking the liberty of forwarding this to the student editor.

Not that it is revelant to your letter, but I wish to share with you that
I am very proud that to claim my grandmother as a Native American and know first hand of some of the discrimination her family, her desendants and she suffered.

          Sincerely,

          C. E. Barber
          General Manager

I just sent my thoughts to the editor, I'll see what type of reply I get, if any. The worst part (besides the obvious) is that this is a college of "higher" learning, nothing like teaching right thinking and perpetuating hate and racism.

That cartoon is way over the line. As a professional journalist, I'd be embarrassed to be associated with a publication like that. The really sad thing is that there would be a public hanging if that cartoon depicted a black person and said something about killing a black before Thanksgiving. It'd be all over CNN, Fox News, CBS, ABC, NBC, front page USA Today, but nothing...no coverage at all. That's the sad thing to me - well, beyond the fact that there are still people out there stupid enough to print something so obviously offensive.

I don't see this as a mascot issue, but one of basic human decency. Shameful.

I toldly agree with you on this point. It has a lot to do with human decency. Though this kind of nosense starts with the mascot. They see Native people used as a mascot or an icon of some sort for their fun and games. So they believe pocking fun and not taking us seriously is okay. We are not real people to a lot of them. This is why they feel they can print such things and get a way with it. This also goes back to the educational system and what they teach in our classrooms from grandschool to college. The list goes on and on.

I just welcome anyone to please send them something of a comment. They need to know that they cant say or print things like this and not have any remorse or consequences.
                      Thanks streamhawk!

Yeah, see these kind of people aren't related to their grandmas and great grandmas. I once met a Black mixedblood at a powwow. He got on my last nerves with the "grandma" statement, so I threw it back in his face. I asked, "doesn't that mean you're Indian too?" They guy was shocked and said, "huh? whattaya mean?" I shook my head and said, "well, the way you tell it, the native blood just stopped at your grandma. I mean, how do you know you're black?" The guy still lost in my trap said, "because my parents are black." So I said, "well how are they black, they just become black all of a sudden?" He walked away puzzled. Folks told me old dude came back the next day all mad because it took him 24 hours to realize how stupid his comments were.

LOL this what i had to tell the president !!!! I am sure that you know why you are getting this email, well first off I would like to say on behalf of the native tribes of Florida this is a very sad , and the person who made this cartoon is obviously childish, arrogant and uneducated. As a Native or"INDIAN" if you want I have no shame in being who I am. I can also tell you that if your so called institution of higher learning or more specific University of Florida( gators ) have and issue or some sort of resentment or maybe jealousy toward us "INDIANS". It would be more realistic if your university or "YOUR" employee who wrote this just came out said that "INDIANS SUCK"!!! But I will also tell you this as much as I been through and as much as we lost as "INDIANS" we still have that sense of respect. Not to open our mouths and talk about something we do not know about. And after all one of the greatest players the game of football have ever seen is a Native American "INDIAN" Jim Thorpe, we make up only a so called 1% of the population but in the armed forces we make up a 1.5%. And I think that speaks louder then words as to how much we love our country and our warrior tradition and a game of football is far from a battle field. We love this land more then your people do look at the way nature as shifted out of balance just cause of the greed of a certain race, we love this land we fought for it when your government send there troops after us and we sent none of them home, we were out manned and out gunned but your government said that they were the ones who were at a disadvantage. Just like the pack of lies our people have been fed but I will say this to you we were here in the beginning seen it all survived it all starvations, dieses, genocide, and we don't go around asking for pity like some races do !! We don't ask for pity cause we have to much pride and obviously the jerk who written this cartoon is pathetic and everything else that rings with stupidity. But there will be a day in age when you will see for your own eyes the goal of our nations when they make there way up into the higher seats of your institutions and law, there is more of us then there ever was so I will be the first to tell you don't think that the 1% is something you can ignore because its just written on a piece of paper. And if your so called employee hates us,tell him to board the next boat back to europe cause we know who the real immigrants are. something to remember WE WERE HERE FIRST AND WE ARE HERE TO STAY!!! Don't let the statistics fool you. We will not be made a fool of Thanksgiving what a joke get real, whos the fool ?????

The Truth dont be ashamed we know who the cowards are !!
