  • Native Americans & Hollywood Industry

I would like to say Hollywood industry makes us feel that Native Americans do not exist; unless the White or Jewish people want to make movies about Native Americans and make profit off of us, which it is ashame. Hollywood needs to treats Native American actors/actresses equally to Blacks, Whites, Latinos and Asians -- why do you think that back in 1970s Marlon Brando didn't accept the Oscars? Because the way Hollywood mistreats Native American; Brando has a daughter, who is part Cheyenne.

Dances With Wolves is one of the highly-grossed (profited) movies about Native Americans and European Americans. But what about the Native American based movies in the threatre recently (End of Spears and New World)? Those movies grossed to $4 million in the box office and that's sad about how some of the people are closed minded about not watching N.A. movies. The TV mini-series Dreamkeepers and Into The West, they were nominated, but never won.

I feel that all the Europeans or Jewish people (Steven Steilberg) who makes movie and make profit out of us, should donate 10-20% of the earnings to any Native American tribe that they desired, or to a few Native American organizations or American Indian College Fund. Native Americans derserve to get and to have a higher education. Native American models, actors, actresses do not deserve to be put on a minimum wage. Do you think that is a good idea for the directors and producers to do so? Also, if others outside our race cannot support us (in the movie/TV industry), then we need to support ourselves and not to despair or complain for long. Did Kevin Costner give contribution to the Native Americans at all? Please reply. Thank you.

P.S. Smoke Signals and other Native American movies that you can think should be at every movie store, and deserve to be in the theatres.

Into the West was something by Spielsburg, but Dreamkeeper was fully a native project and was absolutely awesome!

yes Costner did do some contributing, but then turned right around and was building a hotel or something in the black hills. But what do you expect from a guy who leaves his wife of 20+ years because he gets famous and now young girls want him? Robert Redford on the other hand does alot of advocating for native americans.
Robert Redford, bio, biography, facts, profile, actor, actress, celebrity, celebrities, movie stars, film stars

Yes indeed Blackbear and thank you for your comments. The Dreamkeeper movie was one of the best Native American movies I have ever seeen. I'm glad that Costner did something for the Native American community; because I heard that he broke a promise to a Native American people a long time ago (I don't remember what). I'm also glad that Redford is a Native American advocate; he was honored last year at the Kennedy Center and he deserves it.

          According to wikipedia:

"Steven Seagal was born to a Jewish father Stephen (a high school math teacher), and Irish Catholic mother Patricia (an emergency room technician). "

...which doesn't really answer the question. About the only other thing I can find along the subject of his ancestory is that he was born in Lansing Michigan in 1951.

                  We aren't invisible people

Yeah Holly Wood sucks. They exploit us to no end. We don't exist to them. Because we have no real power or money to go up against them they will see us as inferior and pieces of walking museum exibits. We exist to them in myths and childrens stories and the like.

We need to all stand togather on this. Only by a united front may we flank them and begin to garner support from the non-native community. But it aLL starts with us becomming a force to be feared.

Time and time again I don't see skins taking any position one way or another on issues. Granted some do, I'm not ruling out them, but they are a minority among us. Many skins are ambivalent and don't even care to do anything about the issues, especially this one.

Only through unity will we be able to get heard. Of course there is the financial end of this struggle too. They know we are under budgeted or have no budget for our causes.

We aren't invisible people, we exist and always will. Despite every effort to eraddicate us...

I aggree whole-heartedly with StandingTallWoman's original post and what Oneida Dreamer has to say....

Hollywood has a lot to answer for (especially the old 1950's "Indians are the bad guys" Westerns) in this area (not to mention for all the other people who have been screwed over and exploited by Hollywood, including their use of areas around my hometown in that disgrace of a movie, "Borat" wn: ).

Also, since Dream Keeper is an independant all-native production, I'd like to hear more about it... Like for instance, what is it about? If it's about something that piques my interest, I'll have to check it out. I've found that many independant films (such as the animated film, "Hoodwinked") are 10X better than the spewage that gets dumped out of the Hollywood film factories as of late.
The text in my avatar reads: "We still speak the mother tongue" in Pennsylvania German.

I discovered a few years back that my father and grandfather was cherokee and half white, my grandmother was 5% black and Native American. So I have Native American blood....
