CCC offering scholarships for new Native American Leadership Program

Coffeyville Community College, Coffeyville, Kansas, is introducing a new Native American Leadership Program beginning with its fall 2006 semester. This program will provide a curriculum to Native American students focusing on courses to help build future leaders and mentors in the Native American community.

CCC, a community college and technical school located in Southeast Kansas, has three campus sites – the main campus and Technical Campus, both located in Coffeyville, and a Technical Campus located in Columbus, Kansas, about an hour’s drive from Coffeyville. The College’s main campus is situated on land documented as Indian Territory. Coffeyville is probably best known because of the infamous Dalton Gang’s failed attempt of robbing two banks back in 1892, and because of the success Red Raven athletic and academic teams have enjoyed over the years.

Coffeyville Community College provides many avenues of comprehensive educational opportunities for students. CCC offers Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees, both designed to transfer to a baccalaureate degree-granting institution, and Certificates of Achievement for students completing technology training programs, such as Auto Collision Repair, Emergency Medical Technology, Welding and Computer Aided Design. The College also offers a wide range of student activities and athletic programs in which students may participate.

Native American Leadership Program scholarships are available for official members of federally recognized tribes. This scholarship will provide tuition and loan of books for qualified students. Students who qualify for a Presidential Scholarship will also receive a $500 per semester stipend to assist with dorm expenses.

A Native American Leadership Association will be established as an additional avenue to provide students with fellowship and support and will serve as an extra-curricular organization. The Association will offer a wide variety of activities to educate students cross-culturally and to educate non-Native Americans about the interesting customs and the many concerns Native Americans experience. Members of the Native American Leadership Association will not only provide leadership to coordinate and host cultural events and activities for the College, they will also help to provide cultural opportunities for members of the Coffeyville community. Students enrolled in the Native American Leadership Program are encouraged to participate in the many extra-curricular activities available to them while attending Coffeyville Community College.

The Coffeyville Community College administration, faculty, staff and its Board of Trustees are very excited about offering the Native American Leadership Program and welcoming new Native American students to campus. GoN is shorthand for "Gathering of Nations". I'm assuming currently enrolled means accepted to the University, signed up in classes. I would suggest that you contact UNM directly for the answers to your questions.
