    Mayor Apologizes For Flag Flap

    Kevin Lajoie
    Local News - Thursday, July 06, 2006 @ 10:00

An oversight which resulted in the Akwesasne flag flying upside down at the
Brookdale Avenue traffic circle prompted complaints from Akwesasne residents
and an apology from Mayor Phil Poirier on Wednesday.

Poirier offered the apology to Akwesasne Grand Chief Dooley Thompson after
the city learned the bright purple flag at the traffic circle - facing the
Seaway International Bridge - was flying upside down.

City employees were immediately sent to correct the error.

The flags at the traffic circle had been changed by city employees in the
days leading up to Canada Day.

Municipal works and services manager Fern Hamelin said the flag incident was
an oversight on an employee's part and was unintentional.

"It was not a political statement being made here," Hamelin said.

City officials only learned of the slip-up on Wednesday morning when
Thompson called the mayor's office over the issue. The grand chief said he had
received calls from Akwesasne residents wondering why the flag was flying upside
    down.

Thompson said he accepted Poirier's apology and explanation that the
    incident was an oversight.

Access to the raising and lowering of the flags at the traffic circle is
    restricted by lock and key.
Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear... just sing, sing a song.sigpic
