Lumbee Tribe to celebrate ousting of KKK
    Thursday, January 17, 2008

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will hold a ceremony on Friday to mark the successful ousting of the Ku Klux Klan from Robeson County.

The KKK frequently terrorized Lumbees in 1957 and 1958. On January 13, 1958, Klansmen burned a cross at the home of a Lumbee woman they said was having an affair with a white man.

Five days later, the KKK scheduled a rally and cross burning. More than 500 Lumbees stormed the event, chasing the Klansmen who had gathered there.
