Rapid City - Thousands of high school sports fans are in Rapid City for one thing: the Lakota Nation Invitational. But, it's much more than just basketball. For the last 32 years, the LNI tournament has grown into the event it is today. It began as just an eight team basketball tournament and now it has more than 30. But, the tournament has expanded well beyond the basketball court to showcase the talents of more students.

Bryan Brewer, LNI Tournament Director, "A number of years ago we started with some of our cultural things. Doing cultural things not only for the non-Indians, but to train and teach our young people some of our traditions things like that."

Storytelling event a success at LNI

The cultural events include Pow-Wow dancing, hand games, boxing, and even storytelling. This is the second year the storytelling event has made an appearance at the tournament. Storytelling and storytellers are an important part of the Lakota culture. It gives high school students an opportunity to share their favorite lessons that represent their culture.

Jerome Kills Small, LNI Storyteller Judge, "We have that rich interchange of weaknesses and strengths. It helps to learn by that circle. And I think that kinship system was very strong because of that, that we had been able to communicate. You know, tongues were invented for a reason. That's what I say."
