  • Where were these 640 acres?

Cherokee History: Will Thomas, First and Only White Cherokee Chief

Under "Coming Forth for His People", this article states that,

"Some Cherokees had received reservations of 640 acres by an earlier treaty and no longer resided in what was considered the Cherokee Nation."

Where were these 640 acres? Was this the land in Oklahoma?

    Thanks.

Historic treaties of the Cherokee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Treaty of the Cherokee Agency, 1817
Acknowledged the division between the Upper Towns, which opposed emigration, and the Lower Towns, which favored emigration, and provided benefits for those who chose to emigrate west and 640-acre (2.6 km2) reservations for those who did not, with the possibility of citizenship of the state they are in.

No the land would not have been in Oklahoma since it was not formed as a state until 1907 when land allotments were done again.
This land they are talking about was outside the boundaries of the Old Cherokee nation in this case mainly in North Carolina

This is also why alot of Cherokees were not rounded up in North Carolina because as a stipulation of receiving the acreage they gave up Cherokee Nation Citizenship thus were not subject to the Removal act of 1835
