  • The expression "Off The Reservation"

When I hear white people say that on tv or radio it really ticks me off. What a racist thing to say. It's just as bad as mentioning "jungles" when talking about black people. Like they belong there and aren't good enough to be in white America.

I lose respect and any admiration I had for the people that use the term.

Well, at least black folks have tried to leave "the jungle" and don't revere it as some measure of their "true blackness."

Do you know who actually perpetuates the theory that we "belong on reservations?"

    American Indians.

So, I don't mind you getting mad but get mad the correct people.

I've noticed that phrase being used more and more over the past few years. It's no excuse, but I don't think a lot of people who use the phrase even make the connection that they're referring to American Indian reservations, and what the phrase "off the reservation" implies.

Personally, I prefer the phrase "beyond the Pale."

This keeps going through cycles in the media, it has been used in "Apocolypse Now", "The Wedding Crashers", and on TV numerous times to include "The Sopranos".

It came straight out of the days when BIA and US Army were dealing with Natives that would flee the reservations, whether under cover of the night, or in outright defiance of the govt policy.

The saying then migrated through other govt agencies dealing with their foreign spies and informants. Supposedly, CIA lingo made it sound like tacit authorization to "liquidate" an asset that went "off the reservation" (no longer following orders, no longer under control).

Now, it gets revived in popular media, like a stain that is hard to wash out.

We can educate those who will listen....

Yeah, reservations originally were meant to be almost like concentration camps as the whites began thier occupation of America.

It's still a mean spirited racist comment made by ignorant morons. :-)

            Oh, no issue.
So, just imagine how moronic many Native folks must be to agree with it!

There was a thread, somewhere, that related to Natives dating other Natives and someone -- I forget who -- said something along the lines of, "if you're to good to date your own people...," followed by something derogatory implying elitism.

            I'm not anti-Native, I'm anti-stupid. That's NOT elitist.

            Enough said?
