• Wounded Knee and Johnny Depp

Yesterday being the 124th anniversary of the Wounded Knee Massacre made me wonder if Johnny Depp ever made good on his plan to buy the land and give it back to the tribe.

I briefly tried to google it, but all I could find were articles from 2013.

If Depp didn't buy it, did Czywczynski ever sell it?

As of October of 2014 the land hadn't sold. I would doubt very much that it will ever be able to be sold to any party other than the Tribe or the Survivor's Association.

It is my understanding the tribe owns the land surrounding the old WKTP site. Note this is not the gravesite. I suspect anyone attempting commercial development would have hurdles placed in their way at every turn. I don't know if the tribe would have legal standing to carry out the threat that Brewer has been throwing around of using eminent domain to seize the land, but the uncertainly alone can't be good for property values. Even the local utility companies aren't going to want to send their crews into the middle of that mess.

        Thank you AmigoKumeyaay and OLChemist.

That's kind of what I figured. I know the land in question isn't the gravesite, but what land is it exactly?

If I am not mistaken, it is the 80 acre tract where the Wounded Knee Trading Post and the Gildersleeve homes used to stand, before the occupation. It is south of the intersection of BIA 28 & Big Foot Trail. It is at the base of the hill where the cemetery and monument are located. If you look in Google Maps, you can still see the foundations which survived the fire.
