Where is Yoda when you need a translation.
It is so sad that a family can torn apart by something as simple as a wild pack of dogs.

I went ahead and proofread his post. I hope it's not illegal because I've never done this before.

For being deaf I admire a person for trying his best to become heard. I apologize if my interpretation might have been wrong but I also tried my best with what I was given.

LOL actually I think you got what he was trying to say except for the lite beer part (pretty sure that's litefoot)

Also I'm guessing the wrong button was pushed starting a new thread when I'm guessing he's trying to reply in the rap and hip hop thread.

What????? Quicksilverwade thank you for the translation, I know it must've taken you a while to try to decipher what he was attempting to saying. Poor unfortunate soul. lol It was somewhat like trying to understand what a person under the influence of alcohol or a drug of somewhat is trying to say. I'm not sure what to think of that. Should we even keep on replying to this post?

                  A little off subject but...

I was an Interpeter in my church for a Deaf congregation for three years. In the United States (maybe Canada), the most widely used form of sign language is called ASL, or American Sign Language.

When translating English or another language into ASL, you do not translate literally, or word for word. In ASL you try to convey a thought, or a meaning as opposed to an entire sentence or message.

For example, if I were to interpet (in the deaf communitity it is called Interpeting and not Translating) the sentence....

"I went to the store and bought some candy."

In ASL it would be signed/interpeted like this

"Go to store, Candy I bought and ate."

If I remember correctly future, present, and past tenses are more or less understood by the interpeter and the one recieving the sign.

If anyone has read any deaf literature you will see that it is completely different. Why? Because deaf who are brought up with ASL are taught to read ASL. Reading English is very, very, very difficult for them. Almost like reading a foreign language.

I gave up ASL and interpeting because I was forced into it, and I hated my time in the deaf congregation. But being in that enviornment for three years you pick up a thing or two. I was supposed to be NAD-RID certified, but I rebelled against my folk and refused to do it. I would have made some big money too.

Now I've been away for that 5 years, and I've all but forgotten much of it...

well you will be glad you have that skill the moment you need to use it for the profession you have now.. unless that's already happened. I've wanted to learn myself cause so many of the clients in the company I work for are deaf... whole department just for them.

Of course we should keep on replying. Consider it an open forum for anything that comes across our minds once we decipher the gibberish. I like the way this thread has been about the deaf, very noble.

I've come across the deaf several times in my line of work. More so with EMS than Fire. It becomes awkward when you get them to the hospital and there is no interpeter. I can't stay because I have to write my report and get back to running calls...

However, not every deaf individual knows sign language or ASL. Many times I've run across people who have a "home grown" version of sign language. Then there is English Sign Language where every word is more or less signed out. Fortunately, finger spelling is pretty universal, so you learn how to finger spell very, very, very quickly.

The last time i've had to use it... I was really rusty. You forget it if u never use it...

Smoke Eater is on target! The language of the Deaf is totally different than the language of the hearing.

Several years ago I worked in a large state agency. I had several deaf co-workers. Very few people in this office of about 150 people even knew the alphabet. Communication was done with notes, which of course the deaf did not fully understand. This was not acceptable to me. I learned sign langauge fairly well by "talking" with my hearing impaired co-workers everyday. Soon, everyone thought I could be the "interpreter." However, I was slow and had to spell many words.

I found it interesting that an older deaf co-worker wrote her notes very similiarily to a hearing person. Her notes were much easier to understand. She had not been taught ASL. The younger folk who had been taught ASL did not write in the same fashion and their notes were difficult to understand.

My husband has a deaf cousin, and not even her mother knows sign language. She reads lips. The first time this cousin met me at a family reunion, she was thrilled to have someone to actually communicate with. Broke my heart.

In my opinion, deaf people posses their own language and culture. Unless a person takes the time to really get to know someone who cannot hear, that person can't really understand the world of the deaf.
Seeing the result of our actions should not be why we act; it should be the action itself.

Exactly. One thing I found totally unusual, was that Deaf do not wish to be "Hearing" or "Speaking", nor do they wish for pity to be taken upon them. Deaf are satisfied with being deaf. They are very social, and deaf know each other. When we would have parties and stuff, I would be amazed as to the number of deaf that would show up. So word would get out.

I was suprised as to the number of deaf who could talk, and carry on a "normal" conversation, and sound like any other person who could hear and talk. Usually these are older folks who are adept at lip reading, and have had speech therapy of some sort. Remember not all Deaf are mutes too...

Also not all deaf can automatically lip read either. They have to learn to lip read, the same as they have to learn to read and write English. So don't try to embarass yourself by talking slow because you will look like a [email protected]$$. Either learn the alphabet and fingerspell, take a course in ASL, or grab a pen and pad and write everything down...

You're right, and it was very interesting as to what your past profession was, and it made my mind work a little. It's things like that that no one really thinks about, how in other ways of communicated past, present, and future isn't in their "dictionary". Well, it's better to do whatever profession you are happy with, despite of how low the pay is. Rather than being miserable in a job and getting paid big bucks.
