  • what do you think about.....

I am not trying to offend anyone just trying ot start a convo. What do you think of the floowing questions. wannabes need not reply. talk amongst urselves. it came from a sight discussing various issues about wannabes

    The "Indian princess" phenomenon
From Custer Died for Your Sins by Vine Deloria Jr.:

While a real Indian grandmother is probably the nicest thing that could happen to a child, why is a remote Indian princess grandmother so necessary for many whites? Is it because they are afraid of being classed as foreigners? Do they need some blood tie with the frontier and its dangers in order to experience what it means to be an American? Or is it an attempt to avoid facing the guilt they bear for the treatment of the Indian?

Hmmm.....do they only say they have a 'Cherokee princess grandmother' to Indians? Is this something they would share in an all white group? Or do they just say it to empathize while a Native person is there?

Were they told this when they were growing up? Or did their mother only say this to justify all the 'Native princess' art in their home?

Is their knowledge of their own culture so lacking? Is it so easy to become ndn by claiming some long ancestor that jumped off the trail? Hmmmmm.......
    ...it is what it is...

all good points wyo rose. here is something else for you to think about. when wannabes have baby wannabees and they have baby wannabes at what point will thye start calling native culture their own because they were brought up with it thus succesfully stealing that away too?

I've SEEN that! Well, 2 generations anyway. And they were good at 'being' Indian. Scary stuff......

Fooled me for awhile too. Not that it's hard to do.
        ...it is what it is...

It's because their genetic memory has guilt, and they try to ease that guilt by somehow being tied to the genocide that their direct ancestors so readily took part in.

I think that you may have missed the point. As for your statement about idians who can't speak their language being wannabes you couldn't be more wrong. it is difficult to maintain a language when there are entire generations from some communitees who were removed and sent to residential schools where their language was disallowed. To say that those who don't speak their language are wannabes is like saying that these people had a say in the loss of their language which is like saying that they are some how to blame.

that is funny lol! given the fact that the princess is ussually their great great great great grandma she could have been black becasue she is so many generations back that she her dna barely exists anymore.
With that said check out this wannabe website. They have their very own indian museum and they sell authentic native american crafts (I thought that it was against the law int he us to label crafts native american when made by non natives)

                    A far fetched one....
"She also has a very soft skin. The only trouble with snake women is they copulate with horses, which makes them strange to me. She say's she doesn't. That's why I call her "Doesn't Like Horses". But, of course, she's lying."

I think guilt does have a lot to do with it. When white people learn about our history, they often perceive it as being a conflict having two 'sides' - the cowboy and the Indian, you know? So some people who don't want to associate themselves with the stealing, killing, lying 'side' use the Indian ancestor as a way of disassociating themselves with that side. An Indian princess in the closet is far enough away so they don't have to BE Indian but close enough so they aren't blamed for what whites in the past have done. That's what I think enneway. Course, nowadays, since it's no longer such a detriment to be Indian, the "remote Indian princess" has given way to people who think they ARE the Indian princess!! :indian1: :rofl2:

loss of dna or loss of culture and language which is more important. If hypocritical aholes are going to beat up on 1/4 or less folks who are not responsible for their ancestors choices in trying to survive than since I know my language I am going to beat up on fullbloods whose actions and lifestyle is white but with a tan. There ancestors choices to not pass down there language is just as guilty as people whose ancestors chose not to pass down their dna.

                        cant have it both ways

I must hear that line from white people (especially men) "my great-grandmother was a Cherokee princess" at least once a week. I guess they think it is going to impress me or something. Lately I've been replying with, "Oh...really. Are you proud of that fact?" Of course they say "yes". So I say, "Then tell me...what have you done lately for your people?" Their mouths drop open and have absolutely NO response to something like that!
                          Pi$$ me off...suffer the consequences!

whether or not people passed down their language really had nothing to do with choice because language was taken away from entire generations. as for choices resulting in mixed blood I suppose that it could be argued that these were forced as well. Anyway I think that it is possible that you missed the entire point of the original post which was about wannabes not blood quantum. The whole great great great indian grandma whole was an indian princess is an analogy of sorts.

My grandfather and father went to resident schools I still speak cheyenne. Many cheyennes gave up the language as many other people by not passing to the next generation. I didnt miss the point just every thread that starts off like this ends up criticizing people who are less than a 1/4.

Why is that a touchy subject for me? Because I see my full blood brothers and sisters who don't carry on any tradition except powwowing and choose to follow black ghetto culture or something.

Unfortunately even though few of these people know anything about their own ancestry and because they may have not been beaten down for generations they may have the energy, resources and drive to assist the native population in getting out of the hole so to speak. Instead we reject them and beat them down verbally which was done to us for 100s of years. That is wrong. That is total white BS.
