I don't think 1/4 is nothing and it's not about the money. I could care less about the money. But the people that are wanting to come back are only coming back to the rez for the money and the houses. They are the ones who want to be adopted so they can get per cap. I just don't think it's right. Some of these people are the people who wouldn't even admit they were Indian, now they want the whole world to know. There are a few who want to be a member of the tribe because they believe in their culture..but we know that's not always true.

That's okay it was a question...no arguments here girl. I respect your questions and opinions.

Smeishiguad. I know what ya mean now. Before my tribe got our federal recon there was only a group of us that were around and all the elders that did the work. But after all these "new ndns" came around wanted $$$ and services. I'm like where were they before. They are the ones running our name into the ground. So all the ones including myself try to stay away. But I work for them. So it's kinda hard. Ya gotta get involved in order to have input. So now all of us origanal ones are suffering in the hands of the new ones. It makes me so mad!

I can see that happening. I've seen it with the Saginaw Chips.

I think they're toughening up on membership requirements there tho'.

My opinion I think they should close our membership and open it every ten years. Except newborns. Has nothing to do with blood quant. I just think these people that enroll are 30-50 yrs old and they had their whole life to enroll why do it now? For the services.

That's how a lot of people here in Hannahville feel too. They lived here all their lives and see what's going on. I mean..they are decendents, but as you stated..where were they before. There are a few people here who think the rolls should be closed too. Just like Mt. Pleasant and Forest County are doing. :dontknow: Who knows what will happen.

And all these people have the nerve now to come and say I want this I want that. It would be fine if they weren't so GREEDY (lol) not geedy.

....well, I can see this got WAY off track....but, it's a nice discussion as it pertains to other tribes and how they feel about their own blood quantum thingies.

Here's the latest I got on the Navajo end of it and how it faired in the Coucil's review of the legislation.

The legislation sponsored by Ervin Keeswood, Council delegate from Hogback, N.M, to reduce the blood quantum level requirements to be considered Navajo to one-eighth failed by a vote of 18 in favor and 44 opposed. The change in the law required only a simple majority vote.

The current required blood quantum level is one-fourth.

The legislation was the last item voted on by the 20th Navajo Nation Council at Thursday’s session. The Council recessed at 7:55 p.m. after voting the legislation down.

An earlier attempt by LoRenzo Bates, Council delegate from Upper Fruitland, N.M., to table the legislation until the Fall Session also failed by a vote of 26 in favor and 37 opposed.

The Bates motion included stipulations that Keeswood research more information about the possible effects such a reduction would have on the Navajo Nation.

After the final vote, Keeswood thanked the delegates for considering the legislation.
"This next song goes out to some girls in dot com. They don't know who they are, but, it doesn't really matter anyway."

this is the first time im kinda proud of the council... they probably screwed it up on the bond issue though and staying within thier budget and not dipping in to the designated reserves

man thats one gigantic run on sentence
thanks dad for showing me the way, teaching me the language, and not leaving my mother...*L*

woo-hoo!!!! That's what I'm talking about!! Our tribal government actually had the guts to reach down and grab a hold and say no?!?!?!? WOO-HOO!!!!!!!!!! Now, if only our president would do the same and actually try to do something for the tribe. (ie: running electricity to the people who need [been rquesting for 20 years, still no juice], running water, economic development and actual community services that work) Instead of reducing the blood quantum, they should reduce the amount of time a tribal employee goes on vacation and "seminars"...........

i'm in favor of it but i think with a 1/8 there should be more rules as far as take away the tribal funding for the 1/8 just for a while and see if their loyalty still is with their nation...do this as a trial basis...plus 1/8 they have to do community service on the rez wehter it be at the health center etc.. then after all said and done those who are left should become recognized..basically make requirements....thats just a thought.. the thing is we cant deny those who are 1/8th...cuz their native too..-becca

Just a thought, but I think you had a great idea there Becca, but why not some community service for EVERYBODY??? Not just "those 1/8 people" but EVERYBODY from the tribe EVERY YEAR. That might see some things that have been getting neglected get done, help the community by having the MEMBERS do the work, save MONEY since things are getting done by the VOLUNTEERS, and result in some improved cummunity relations since people have to WORK TOGETHER.

Probably sounds better that it would be in actuality, but I STILL think it's a good idea.

And in the case of "expanding" membership, just think of all of the "services" that could get performed if 50,000 members started "giving back" at least a little time every year!
