The Indian Health Service needs to commit more resources to the prevention of suicides by youth in Indian communities, according to Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D.
Indian suicides made up one-half of the total suicides in South Dakota in 2004 for people 24 and younger, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In a release, Johnson said he wrote to the IHS’ acting director at the request of tribal members.
