  • AG seeks high court review of ruling against state troooper

    Providence, Rhode Island (AP)

The attorney general’s office wants the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a finding that a state trooper used excessive force against a Narragansett tribal member during the 2003 smoke-shop raid.

The high court is being asked to review a federal appeals court decision that upheld a jury verdict in a civil trial in the case. Prosecutors argue that if the decision stands, it would have a chilling effect on police officers dealing with suspects who are resisting arrest.
