Fort Sill Apache Tribal officials say a 2007 court settlement in Oklahoma gives them legal grounds to open a casino in New Mexico, despite opposition from Gov. Bill Richardson.
Richardson during early March ordered state police to block access to the tribe’s casino just off Interstate 10 east of Deming, if gambling was started. The National Indian Gaming Commission told the Fort Sill Apache Tribe that it cannot legally open the casino and risked enforcement action if gambling is permitted on the tribally owned land in New Mexico.
