  • Onondaga Faith Keeper Oren Lyons encourages ceremony

Video Produced by Nick Vander Puy
    Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin (NFIC)

Facing catastrophic climate change, pandemics, and loss of water, Onondaga (Haudonsaunee) faithkeeper Oren Lyons advises youth to return to ceremony. Lyons says Indigenous values like respect, conservancy, and loving kindness for the earth are implicit in ceremony.

Lyons says thousands of years ago, the teachings warned about challenging the natural laws, noting that the warning still applies to how human beings veiw the earth. "Let your elders guide you, every generation will make its own history."

Nick Vander Puy interviewed Oren Lyons during late July at the thirty second annual Traditional elders and Youth Circle which was held this year on the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Reservation of northern Wisconsin.
