The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian is mounting the largest retrospective of works by artist Fritz Scholder at its Washington and New York locations.
The exhibit “Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian” opened Nov. 1 in both cities and examines how his work as an expressionist painter and sculptor challenged portrayals of Native Americans. Scholder was one-quarter Luiseno but insisted he wasn’t any more American Indian than he was German or French.
