Carl Venne, chairman of the Crow Indian tribe, died in his sleep early Sunday.
Venne, 62, was found about 8:30 a.m. Saturday. He apparently died of natural causes in his sleep at a relative's house in Hardin.
No foul play is suspected, according to the Big Horn County Sheriff's office, which investigated the death with assistance from the Crow Police Department. It is standard procedure to investigate unattended natural deaths. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.
Word of the death spread quickly across the tribe and the nation. About 100 people gathered outside of the peach-colored house to offer prayers and support.
