Lawmakers are waging a high-stakes game over the future of gambling in Florida with as much as a billion dollars on the table.
Saying Florida should remake itself into a premier tourist destination for gamblers, the Senate is backing a proposal this session to let the Seminole Tribe of Florida turn its Hard Rock Cafes into full-blown casinos while giving dog tracks, horse tracks and jai-alai frontons a chance to put in machines that look a lot like Vegas-styled slots.
