  • H1N1 flu now reported in 34 states, first tribal case emerges

    By Terri Hansen
Environment and Science Reporter (NFIC) 5-03-09 Update

Whether you call it swine flu, the H1N1 flu, or influenza A, the official word is – this has the potential for a pandemic.

The Phase 5 alert issued by the World Health Organization will probably go to Phase 6, the highest degree on the pandemic alert scale even though health officials are reporting many cases of the influenza A show symptoms no worse than seasonal flu.

President Obama, in his May 2 weekly radio address, said unlike other viruses that have emerged in the past, “This is a new strain of the flu virus, and because we haven’t developed an immunity to it, it has more potential to cause us harm, which is why we are acting quickly and aggressively.” It has the potential for a pandemic, which is why his administration is acting quickly and aggressively. He said he was optimistic they we're going to be able to manage this effectively.
