The morning rain drizzled and wind whipped through the trees as it had for thousands of years in the Mohawk land of Akwesasne this May. The sky cleared as dozens gathered at the Kawehnoke port of entry into Canada.
Standing with signs saying “Help Us Keep the Peace” and erecting a tent where chairs circled tables of food, the people had come to protest the upcoming June 1 arming of customs agents at the border that cuts through the reservation.
