Tohono O’odham officials say they no longer plan to build a federal detention facility on their tribal land north of Sahuarita and will begin looking for an alternative site.
The proposal to build a 750-bed facility on land within the tribe’s San Xavier District sparked community protests from nearby Sahuarita residents and was facing opposition from a growing number of community and government leaders.
