The federal government says it will make a preliminary ruling by the end of the year on whether to officially recognize Long Island's Shinnecock Indian Nation.
Recognition would give tribal leaders the right to open a casino in the famed Hamptons region. They say the casino would help improve living conditions for the tribe.
