Duwamish tribal leaders and Rep. Jim McDermott testified in Washington, D.C., in the latest attempt to gain federal recognition for the tribe.
The Duwamish have been seeking for years federal recognition, which would bring federal money to pay for housing, tribal government, education and other expenses. The seattlepi.com reports recognition potentially could allow the tribe to open a casino in Seattle, something other tribes in the area have opposed.
