Members of a coalition representing an American Indian tribe in North Carolina are collecting signatures to recall the tribal chairman.
The Fayetteville Observer reports the Lumbee Sovereignty Coalition is collecting signatures to recall Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett and other elected officials who supported the tribe’s recently voided contract with a Nevada gaming consultant.
Swett and other targets would not talk about the recall effort last week.
The Lumbee Sovereignty Coalition was formed earlier this year in protest of the tribe’s agreement to let a gaming consultant handle the tribe’s push for federal recognition. Some feared the contract risked the tribe’s fight for federal recognition for a chance to open a casino in Robeson County.
