It's a gif. I saved the avatar I wanted to use on a disk, put the url of the site I got from where it belonged, browsed through what I had saved, and clicked on it. nwceagle.gif is what appeared in the space. Then I did my final click to make it official & got the message. Maybe this info will help you figure out what I did wrong.
Thanks, Webbie!:)

I'm having trouble uploading a custom avatar. This error message keeps on popping up.
vBulletin Message The uploaded file is not a valid GIF or JPG file. Please ensure that it is and try again.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any solutions?
Thanks!

No, when you reach 20, you can pick from the ones supplied. There are about 30 to choose from.
