  • Too hot for Arizona convicts???

It's even hotter than usual in Phoenix, 116 degrees sets a new record, the Associated Press reports:

About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside, the week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. "It feels like we're in a furnace," said James Zanzo, an inmate who has lived in the tents for over year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic.
On Wednesday he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths."

I went there right when they changed it from 3 meals a day to two. During the three meal days, sometimes we didn't know what the hell we were eating. That day, some guy said it was emu, another said ostrich. If you didn't wake up to line up for chow, you missed out. Some guy in my tent got a whole cherry pie from one of the guys working in the kitchen. He shared it with everyone in there. Then they switched it to the two bag meal. It consisted of 5 or 6 slices of bread that was baked pretty good, 5 or 6 slices of bologna or ham, an orange, a packette of graham crackers and a container of juice. Alot of people called them ladmo bags.

During the summer, you have to watch out for scorpions. The top bunk is at least two degrees hotter. Sometimes you can see rats on top of the tents from the lights outside. Its located right next to the dump. Its also located next to the dog pound. There were nights where you could smell the dogs burning that they put to sleep. It was raunchy.

One cigarette would go for $4. The first day I got there, some guy od-ed in the shower. And that was the job release tents. There was this really big female d.o. there who had red hair. Everyone called her big red.

And then, when they are about ready to release you, they put you in a little waiting cell with around 20 other people. That was a mind trip.
