            I was out of town for the weekend and of course I get the hotel room that is the furthest from the WiFi access point so for the exception of my phone I had no internet over the weekend. Kind of feels good once in a while to be disconnected.

                • Thinking about remembering a time when there was no internet...

                  Not only do I remember a time without internet, I also remember a time when...

                  There was no cable tv;
                  There were no vcr's;
                  After vcr's became available, they were only for rich folks;
                  There were no cellphones, and the only people who had pagers were doctors;
                  There were no Mr. Coffee makers, percolators only;
                  Other than concert footage, there were no music videos;
                  Spam was something you fried up to eat, had nothing to do with mail;
                  The mail was delivered twice a day;
                  There was no such thing as self-serve gas stations;
                  No one outside the border regions knew what nachos were;
                  Showing Barbara Eden's belly button on "I Dream of Genie" was almost obscene;
                  Saying that something "sucked" WAS considered obscene;
                  Buying a calculator was a major expense;
                  We had to make a trip in to Tulsa to buy items such as wheat bread (Roman Meal) - white Wonder Bread was all that was available at the grocery store in my little town;
                  KISS was considered HARD rock;...

                  And the list goes on. It goes on so long, I don't feel old school; I feel positively paleolithic!

                  • I'm a bit younger than some of y'all on this forum but old enough to remember:

                    A time before the internet was readily available.
                    When computers had floppy disks that were actually floppy (5.25" disks).
                    When I typed school reports on a typewriter and had to load the ink and correction ribbons.
                    When a trip to Blockbuster was still a thing.
                    When cordless phones had antennas that you had to pull out.
                    When the original Nintendo was still current technology.
                    Manually tuning the channels on a TV (those stupid little wheels you had turn).
                    Tape player Sony Walkmans.
                    Computer paper came in a large box, the edges had holes and you had to tear the pages off and the edges off.
                    The first computer I used was a Mac IIe.
                    Oh and this little thing called "playing outside" that kids today seem to know nothing about.

                    • kids these days have safe plastic and bright colored playgrounds.

                      our neighborhood playgrounds (there were two nearby) were made of railroad track wood. so you got splinters and icky sticky fingers. the slide was metal and burn your legs hot in the summer. the merry go round was rusted, and was alot of work making it spin. there was swings that the neighborhood boys liked getting them tangled up at the top. i gotta mention there were a few bars in stumbling distance, so the playgrounds also doubled as porta pottys lol

                      i can remember one park in minneap that had a liquor store on the corner. wonder what child safety freaks would think of that?

                                  Hi,
                                  Just wondering if anyone has info on recipes for beef soup and frybread to feed 200-300 people at an outdoor powwow? My step-father passed and we would like to honor him with a feed but have never done this before. I would appreciate suggestions on recipes, ingredients, cooking times, equipment...

                                  If you were forces to live on a small Iceland, big enough to do a powwow dance, alone, what would you bring with you?
                                  There are off course fresh water and enough fruits to survive on your Iceland.
                                  And it's hot enough to not fresh at night.
                                  BUT no electricity, so sorry, you would...
