Had a weird experience today. About a year ago, in the town where I live here in Cali, I noticed a sign outside one of the frequently turned over commercial buildings on my way to work. It said:

OKLEVUEHA Native American Church

I've been curious about it ever since, so today I stopped by. When I walked in it smelled like pot mixed with other things (Which didn't bother me). The lobby was well kept with different flyers and odds and ends on the wall, nothing bad. Over the next few minutes different people came out of a door on the far side of the lobby, 4 or 5 white people.

Then I was greeted by a young security guard (Indian from India) who was very friendly. I didn't know he was Indian from India until he saw me and started slightly bowing and making praying hands. He spoke decent English; "So do you want to become a member?"

"I don't know" I said.

"Let me find a volunteer to speak with you." He said.

Then I meet a very friendly, respectful young man. He explained to me that this Native church was founded by some Injun from Utah (Name started with an M, can't remember it). He explained that mainly people get together and use medicinal marijuana, and if I had any questions about attending sweat or anything spiritual he could set up a meeting for me with the spiritual leader. Then he says "She is in training now, but she could do a special pipe ceremony for you."



"Is she native?" I asked

"No" he said looking down at his shoes

"Are you native?" I asked

"No I'm Cambodian" He replied

Then I came back here to Red's

Update: They shut down. The building is up for lease, and the sign has been taken down. Tomorrow is payday and I'm going straight to the donut shop LOL.

Hey BrokenArrow, got any Zwetschgenkuchen? I'd take a big old slice and some iced tea. I'm hoarse from my evening lecturing, LOL.

If I had an decent plums I'd make some. But, it won't be as good as stuff Mrs Muller made. Half an inch of crunchy sweet streusel on top. She'd bring it to church picnics. She used wild plums from down in the draws along the White River. I think those trees are all gone now.

Dang, a SnackWell vanilla creme is a poor substitute.

I gonna go and look for some "Zwetschgen" and ask mom to make the "Kuchen". Unfortunately, I will not get wild plums from White River. Wild plums are very rare where I live, as not to say almost non existent. Sigh.

Very sad when all the plum trees are gone.

There is a farmer caffee about 6 miles away who have "Zwetschgenkuchen" which is almost as good as made by grandma. More sigh for grandma's "Kuchen". A long time ago.

Spent the day watching Florence. It seems like later in the weekend we will be getting a little rain. The hotel is full of evacuees-and their pets. A lot of these people seem to think they will be able to go home Saturday or Sunday. I just want to ask them "what part of rainfall and flooding similar to Hurricane Harvey" don't you grasp. People who live on islands are going to have to wait until the bridges are inspected. Not to mention their won't be any power and they will probably be under a boil water alert for a few days. I understand their wanting to get back home, but if they can't get closer than 50 or 60 miles to home, they are going to be stranded.

They can't wait to take a swim in they're houses.

Boy, I watched a real disappointment of a film -- The Dark Wind. I'm not a big Hillerman fan but I kind of liked The Dark Wind.

The casting was odd. A very young Lou Diamond Phillips as Jim Chee, stumbling along with a vaguely bewildered look on his face for most of the movie. Gary Farmer as Cowboy Dashee seemed to almost be comic relief. Fred Ward as Lt Leaphorn. The guy from Dark Shadows, who played the bad guy, was the most convincing. More than a few parts were played very broadly, almost slipping into caricature. Nobody seemed really at home in their roles.

The adaptation of the book to a movie was going to be problematic at best, since the final showdown takes place in a ritually closed Hopi village, during an initiation ceremony. To replace this, the film makers invented a fairly inexplicable ceremony of guys dancing around a fire with wolf skins on their heads.

And I'm not the best at spotting movie goofs - especially not on first viewing. But, the mic was in frame almost as much as some of the actors. I spotted it three times. There was a key scene in the end, where it just kept dipping in and out of frame.

Most people seem to adapt to what everyone else is wearing in public and mainly it's dark colors (in my area) no colorful colors. The thing is, you stand out wearing a hat while everyone else is not. How can you wear your hat which also has just one color and not attract attention. Need an invisible hat. Just want to wear what one likes and not stand out while most people wear the same kind of boring looking clothes. Dangit! Who serves the drinks?

I need that buttered popcorn. I went out to the studio at the club today and the unpaved road and parking lot was such a churned up muddy mess, I was afraid I was going to stuck again. So, I binge watched the first season of the Crown.

I guess I'm too American or something. I always end up wondering how in the heck anyone let the entire royalty system evolve.
