The ice is all gone. Now what fell out of the sky and is blowing around is actual snow. Now the second storm on Weds, which is going to dump another +4” on top of this mess is going the be our “Wintry mix”(tm).
That is the one I’m scared of. That stuff is heavy. I’ve got one tree left. It makes me nervous. The first tree I had to take out, dropped a 1/3 of itself on my car, the year we got 12” of snow.
That wreck was hideous. 133 cars and 6 dead. It happened on a section of elevated, express lanes. That section is in a dip with reduced visibility. People follow too closely under dry conditions. Folks aren’t much better in snow and ice. There’s also a lot of debate about whether the lanes had been pretreated.
The windmills out in West Texas are frozen. Texas is a leading producer of wind power. A big chuck of our generating capacity is off line. They started the rolling blackouts at 3am. They’re asking us not to bathe, cook, do laundry and unplug everything non-essential. I’m hoping my neighborhood will be spared since we’re jambed in among all these hospitals.
After growing up in snow country, I’m a connoisseur of school closing announcements. I just heard one I always dreamed of as a kid. “If you’re listening to us, your school is closed.” The announcer says he read the list and the only thing that is open was “Our Lady of The Badass. But, you had to walk up hill both ways.”
