  • Thanks to the blooming catawaba tree, the air around our house smells vanilla-ish. The flowers remind me of mini orchids. Since the drought was so bad for so long a few years ago we no longer have catawaba worms. The first time I ever saw them, I was scooping them up and feeding them to the chickens who thought they were in heaven. Hubby came home from work and about had a cow when he asked me what I was doing and I told him. Turns out, the worms make great fish bait. I think the long drought killed off the worms.

We've been dealing with everything from a couple of days with near record highs, and a couple of mornings of near record lows. It was 90 one day, rain and storms came through, and it hit 50 the next morning.
Take nothing for granted. Life can change irrevocably in a heartbeat.

I will not feed the troll-well, I will try.

              • Rain and rain and rain. We'll get a clear day, then more rain. We're Houston muggy right now. I went outside this morning and had a grad school flashback.

The yard has run amok. My lawn guy had cataract surgery. He's out of commission for a while. I've been trying to find someone who will pick up a couple mows. Everyone I've tried so far wants a contract for the lawn. What happened to teenagers trying to earn some money? When I was in high school, we were always scheming for a way to make some money - lawn mowing, raking, snow shoveling, babysitting, running errands, housecleaning....

If I don't post again, the lawn got restless and took me out.

                • Lawn, that means "Gras", the hair of mother earth.

Than your lawn needs some hair dressing.

Hm, are there easier ways to earn moeney as teenager today with less physical labor or labor at all?

                        • It isn't the snake part per se, but the pit viper part that bothers me. I used to play with garter snakes ((Thamnophis var) as a child.

My mom wanted them in her flower beds and veggie gardens to eat pests. They did a good job controlling the slubs and the snails, which were a real problem around the corn and beans. She'd sink shallow flower pots in the ground in her flower beds and garden to give them water. She'd pay me a dime a head to catch garter snakes in the woods behind our house and relocate them to the flower beds and stone fence behind our garden. They loved the fence. Seeing just how many snakes can hide in a rock fence cured me of sitting on rocky outcrops in the desert. When we moved, the folks who bought the house tore out the fence because it was "all snakey."

(She'd also plant inordinate amounts of fennel, which is supposed to deter snails and deer. Our Pennsylvania deer apparently never read that circular from the extension office and ate so many fennel and tomato plants, my great uncles used to speculate that our suburban deer tasted like spaghetti sauce with Italian sausage. Now, I'm having flash backs to spreading blood meal to deter the deer. *Shudder*)

We lost some brushes and small trees in pots due to freezing, cold and wettnes. Cleaning the pots, lots of snails appeared. Those with shells and those without. Many leafs show sings of being eaten from the branch.

May be the extension office never teached the deer reading at deer school and or forgot to distribute the circular among the deer. Or may be the deer knew but the fennel tasted so well, the deer decided to disobeye the rule.

Just wondering if anyone has info on recipes for beef soup and frybread to feed 200-300 people at an outdoor powwow? My step-father passed and we would like to honor him with a feed but have never done this before. I would appreciate suggestions on recipes, ingredients, cooking times, equipment...

There are off course fresh water and enough fruits to survive on your Iceland.
And it's hot enough to not fresh at night.
BUT no electricity, so sorry, you would...
