  • Mars is coming closer....literally....in August.....

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is
catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest
approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars
may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has
not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long
as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest
object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear
25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification

By August 27, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the
east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at
nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded
history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this with
your children and grandchildren. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS
    AGAIN
    Everything is gonna be alright!

    Be blessed - got love???

hmmm.... that's what they said about Mars in 2003...

I remember one particular night when that August when you could see Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus, as well as a big full moon all at the same time! it was awesome!

I thought they said it last year too! But, with all the details just listed, who am I to argue. Besides, in 2004 they didn't really say that Mars would be as large or as visible as the moon. I'm in......I'll mark it down and we'll have something else to talk about in August.

Then sometimes, just sometimes the Crow can bring the soul back and put the wrong things right.”

what's really cool is that when Mars is in the night sky, it is very bright... I had a nice bright guiding star several times last August as I drove home at night.... I loved it!

I read somewere tha tit may take Mars at leas 5 years to return to it's orginal orbit. it's like in a science fiction movie & if we hava full moon it will appear that we have two of them.

If it's close enough, Jdazmum can scoop off some of the hematite for use as a sunscreen (chiih). Mars supposedly gets it's red sand from this mineral that I remember having put on my face a long time ago during the summer months.

By the way, how is an naked eye defined? Without contacts or corrective lens?

"No on alive today" sounds kinda harsh, eh?

Ha-ha-ha-ha. Wonder if there will be a full moon too on that day?? wouldn't that be cool? Freaky. I'm not risking another ceremony, not looking at it.
