Do y'all remember the so-called recession? I don't. I read about it in the paper and I thought, WTF? Whatta hell is a recession? People were in sorta panic. And here I was, whatta hells going on? I never saw/felt anything different. I still ate the same bargain foods, shopped in resale shops( that sounds so much nicer than second-hand), frequented yardsales. Not a biggie. Meanwhile businesses were going under and news stories were talkin' about "how to reduce your expenses".

I still haven't figured it out. I had no clue we were inna recession.
If you are talking about in the 70's, yeah I kinda remember some of that even though I was a kid. I remember long lines for gasoline cause there was a shortage. I remember lots of family cutbacks.. and talk about lots of people losing jobs....but other than that, for me it was'nt any different from any other time. I guess when you are'nt upper middle class to rich it was'nt really a problem huh? My dad was a janitor for the school system and I don't think he once worried about losing his job LOL.
Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear... just sing, sing a song.sigpic

Yeah, that was the time. When the announcement was made that the economy had recovered, I still hadn't figured it out.

        Ok.....oldster here.......

What I remember of it...... hubby and I were married in '71 and in like '73 or '74 was when the recession happened. It had to do with the Arab fuel embargo. Price per barrel went from like $3 barrel to over $5 over night. That made the gas at the pump go from .30 gal to like$1.20 gal overnight.

That was at a time when 85% of the people drove themselves to work. That's when the idea of carpooling.... ( kalaka... for those of you that remember the commercial... ) started.

Welllllllll....... with all the fuel stuff goin on....... that of course made DOW react....... stable markets then dove to all time low. You had some people jumping out of buildings and all like they did during the depression only not as bad. Nixon didn't want people to compare the times then to the depression so that is why they kept saying....... REcession. Least that is what I remember.

Anyway......... he in answer to that........ printed a bunch of money as to help put off the recession........ (duh.... what was he thinking.... ) and that caused a little relief then but then mushroomed which we still haven't paid off that debt.

The way it effected me was hubby was working at an iron pourer in a foundry that made piano plates for all the big piano companies... Kendall and etc. (Liberace had special orders... ) anywayyyyyyyyy............... when times are hard....... people are NOT going to be buying pianos.... so they really cut back and he was laid off from a couple jobs.

        Dang........... flashbacks!!

And wasting gas just looking for gas because you were afraid you won`t make your destination when traveling long distances with children aboard.

Gee, recession sounds like times when your horse was worth more than your car. People still do it on the rez, travel to the store or neighbors on horses. It cuts back on gas and all them washboards.

I can still remember my mom's old metal stove too, she use to make some delicious tortillas on them. THe metal kind that is rectangular, I think some old schoolers still have them though.
Fall down 7 times, get up 8. MY FAMOUS WORDS.

Around here we have a store that sells them new and they have trouble keeping them in stock. It seems the factory cant build them fast enough. There are three kinds, wood, coal, (and for the city slickers) gas. The grates are different. The grates for wood are farther apart then the ones for coal. The city Slickers might want a gas insert so they don’t have to dispose of the ashes. That can be a problem in big cities. Right now they could put the ashes on the snow to improve traction and melt the snow.

When I lived with my Aunt and Uncle, in PA, we had an automatically stoked coal furnace but the ashes and ‘clinkers’ had to be removed every day. That was my job.
‘Clinkers’ – chunks of ash fussed together by heat. Normally hot when removed. The furnace automatic stoker started working poorly or even got jammed if they were not removed. Then the heat of the house dropped. Let me forget to check the furnace twice a day (before and after school) and I would hear about it. I never noticed it because my room was next to the furnace.

lol its been fun thinking back and remembering a simplier time...and many people still live that life, whether it be back to nature tree hugger types,or the Amish people who survive quite nicely with out the use of engines or electricity( altho i have seen a few amish businesses wired in the past few years)
i think we as indian people have always taken what was new and adapted it to our own purposes...the horse is a great example...cloth...metal impliments...and now computers and cell phones...i think as with anything in life,we need to make sure we maintain control of the technologies around us and not let them consume and control us...

Anyone remember back in the '70s when they said there was no more oil available because fossil fuels had been depleted?

Then they jacked up the gas prices?

                            they lied

Tried looking for gas in a big city like Seattle, Wash., with still four hours of driving left for your destination.
