I bought my grand daughter's the Christmas Barbie doll and both my daughter and my daughter-in-law told me that the Christmas Barbie was fine but NOT to buy any Barbie's that were American Idol or Bratz or that were dressed in short shorts. low tops or sheer stuff for the girls. Of course I had to go back to the store to see what they were talking about and was surprised at how some of the Barbie dolls were clothed! Anyone else run into this problem buying Barbies for the little girls in their lives?

I have not and actually have not looked at any in the stores lately. But I will now. I have stopped buying the regular barbies for my daughter but have been buying the Native American Barbies that are still out there being on Ebay. I buy them for my daughter on her birthday and for Christmas. It started with her Northwest pacific barbie since it resembled half my liniage and the next year I bought her the Eskimo barbie for my other half also. I am curious and will check out these barbies dressed in short shorts and such

There are still respectable Barbies out there...just gotta look...and Brats arent marketed for the younger gurls they are sposed to be aimed at preteens...u know trying to make them play with toys instead of boys...my daughter like the Brats dolls, and has dozens of them along with Barbies..shes 11...and ultimately it the parents that are picking the dolls

I loved barbies growing up. Of course, back then the clothes weren't all skankified and whatnot. *L* But I don't see a problem with them. I mean, they're dolls...and they had tons of clothes, houses, cars, pools.....I mean, what girl wouldn't want one? You couldn't play dress up with those fluffy soft dolls....b/c they didnt' make the clothes like Barbie had. *L* To each their own. But if your child wants one, just make sure she gets a decent dressed one??? ROFL

I went and bought the new Princess Jasmine Disney doll, whose body is much more realistically proportioned and he face is much more ethnic than any dyed brown Barbie doll. Every brown Barbie *Mattel Doll I've seen still has European facial features. The Jasmine doll we have now is also more poseable, so her little fancy dance dress I made for her looks cute, and her feet are not posed for high heels, so the tiny little cloth mocs I made for her actually look good!
I did notice how gross dolls are being dressed, but I also saw the cute outfits you can buy for them, alot of them are more reasonable! Us Mommy's just gotta watch out...don't want our tiny tots growing up to fast!Ipsica Waci

I have to tell a story in here....
Barbie was just not for my daughter. We went out to get my daughter some new bed sheets. My other half suggested Barbie. I didn't think it was a good idea,(since we did get a barbie before and it didn't go over well) Barbie became a real mess. Well we went through with it and bought the sheets. By the end of the week I went to clean the bed.....Barbie was no longer blonde she had brown hair and brown eyes with a crayon. LOL I asked her what happened and she said it didn't look like her. LOL Now I don't buy Barbie. The heart can only smile when your listening to it

I always liked the really dressed up Barbies, like when they are wearing ball gowns and stuff for my girls shelves and I also liked to buy them regular Barbies to play with and that we could buy clothes and stuff for. It's just some of what they are dressing them in lately seem a bit too revealing and my girls and my daughter-in-law don't want our grands to get the idea that this stuff is okay to wear in real life.
I like the Native Barbies, but they are hard to find around here.Courage is just fear that has said it's prayers.

I don't like Barbie-never did as a kid either. What I don't like about them is they have a very unrealistic body type. I wouldn't believe that was important but my 10 year old niece says she hopes she will have a body just like Barbie, when I asked what if that isn't in Gods plans for you to look like that. She repied without batting an eye. "then I will just get plastic surgery. Yikes!

Back in the 60's when I was a kid (turned 46 today!), I was a tomboy, which kinda irked my mom. She bought me a couple of Barbie's, and my brother got GI Joes. I dressed my Barbies up like Amazons- complete with ink-pen tattoos- and made them armored breast and back plates, shin guards and gleaves(fore-arm guards), from aluminum trays that the meat used to come in from the store, as well as swords, shields, spears, bows, etc, and my brother and I would have "epic" battles between my amazons and his barbarain warriors(we made outfits for his GI Joes too). One day, when one of my amamzons got captured and refused to give up the secret plans, she was put to death by bending down the 2 maple saplings in the front yard, tying her to them, and letting go of the trees. Amazon Barbie flew off in several pieces.
My mother thought we were just sick...

I hate Barbies!! There are Barbies up the wall in my house! LOL. Naw just kidding, don't hate them, but I was too busy buying them and next thing I knew, I was stepping on them in the hallways, in the restroom, in the tub, outside in the yard, it becomes an epidemic. My daughter has like 20 of them!Fall down 7 times, get up 8. MY FAMOUS WORDS.

It could be a self esteem problem but I think it may just be a reflection of the fashion industy itself. Let me explain, she is very fashion savy. She loves fashion magazines, TV programs and loves fashion shows. (where she gets this, I don't know but she has always been this way.) She is very aware of styles and she's amazingly accurate on choosing flattering styles not just for herself but for me too. And she really has a knack for accessories whether its a belts, jewlery or the all important shoes. I honestly know very little about these things having been a tomboy preferring my Breyer horses to dolls. I guess what really concerns me is that she doesn't think that there is anything wrong with plastic surgey, as if it is an everyday occurance like getting your teeth cleaned. I don't know if it's the Barbies or the TV or just the overkill of sexuality that we all see everywhere. It's probably a combination of everything but sometimes it is worrisome.

you know now that I've reread this, my niece may owe a large part of her fashion sense to Barbie and those Brat dolls. She's somewhat outgrown them now and thankfully because those little shoes and accessories were EVERYWHERE and they would hurt when you stepped on them. So maybe Barbie isn't all bad since it did make her fashion savy......but I'm still against the plastic surgery part
