I asked her about it and she quite simply does not believe there is anything wrong with plastic surgery. I guess I can't really blame her. I mean you see all these film and pop stars. They talk openly about surgery and how it has drastically improved thier lives. You see them flat chested one day and then the next day they look like they have shoved balloons down thier shirt. Ever watch MTV lately? those girls are pretty much naked and the popular song lyrics all talk about womens parts. What do you "My Humps" by Black Eye Peas is talking about. Fergie, the singer, talks about how guys give her all sorts of things like diamonds so they can be near her " lovely lady lumps". On MTV a few years ago (it may still be on, I don't know.)they had a reality show where teens (mind you they are 18) were surgically changed into thier favorite stars. Look at shows like The Swan when people compete to undergo the most drastic surgical changes to win. I read in one of her teen magazines that many affluent parents will give thier children as a gift for either thier 16th Birthday on high school graduation, boob jobs. (which says to me that they have more money than sense) And No she nor her older sister, is not allowed to read that magazine anymore but we can't lock her in a box. Maybe I'm just the one that has become old fashioned. Gracious I have turned into my mother! :0
I'm afraid that I'm one of those parents who will be giving their daughter a boob job for her 17th birthday, but its a breast reduction and the earliest the doctors will do it is 17 and we want her to have it done while she's still covered by our insurance. Normally, my husband and I don't like plastic surgery but our youngest daughter took after my mothers side in the breast dept. and she has severe back pain because she is so active and the doctors have told us if she doesn't have reduction done she will be in a back brace by the time she's 20. I just worry about young girls who think plastic surgery will solve all their physcal short comings.

So maybe Barbie isn't all bad since it did make her fashion savy......but I'm still against the plastic surgery part
I would sit down with her parents and discuss this plastic surgery bit with them. Something is very wrong that she feels as if this is an easy out from taking care of herself physcially.

My daughter has like 20 of them!
Polly Pockets were the things I used to end up stepping on all the time and finding in the tub. I swear those things should come with a label called tweezer toys!

I never did like the Native Barbies being sold...as I said before, the Princess Jasmine dolls have a better ethnic look and they are more realistically posed, and so I just made the dresses myself. All the Mattel Barbies have the exact same features, including that stupid mouth, but the "Ethnic" barbies are dyed various, inhuman shades of beige. Very ugly!

It could be a self esteem problem but I think it may just be a reflection of the fashion industy itself. Let me explain, she is very fashion savy. She loves fashion magazines, TV programs and loves fashion shows. (where she gets this, I don't know but she has always been this way.) She is very aware of styles and she's amazingly accurate on choosing flattering styles not just for herself but for me too. And she really has a knack for accessories whether its a belts, jewlery or the all important shoes. I honestly know very little about these things having been a tomboy preferring my Breyer horses to dolls. I guess what really concerns me is that she doesn't think that there is anything wrong with plastic surgey, as if it is an everyday occurance like getting your teeth cleaned. I don't know if it's the Barbies or the TV or just the overkill of sexuality that we all see everywhere. It's probably a combination of everything but sometimes it is worrisome.

That is scary! Have you mentioned her mind set to her parents? Sounds to me like your neice needs some serous self esteem.

I used to steal my cousin's Johnny West stuff and use it for my Barbies. He finally gave me the horse and stuff.
