  • Does anyone here watch those PBS shows like Frontier house?

I got hooked on the PBS shows about people living like people used too in the past when PBS used to sister of my hearts web site for Research for their 1900's house. The 1940's house had me shaking my head that the Engish used tin over a hole as a bomb shelter, but Frontier House really had me shaking my head. They were suppose to build log cabins and everything themselve just like people did on the Frontier. A couple of those houses didn't have any mud between the logs, and 1 guy had about a cord and a half of firewood sawed, not even split and thought that was enough to get his family through a Montana winter as their sole source of heat and fuel for cooking! Heck, that wouldn't be enough to get you through a normal Ga. winter as just a source of heat!
They are about to start a show called Texas Ranch and I can't wait to see how modern people handle a early 1900 style Texas ranch.

I think the ad I saw for it yesterday said it was set in 1868 so this should be a hoot! Modern American's living like people had to back in 1888! Women who are use to wearing less than 10 pounds of clothing having to dress in clothes that weigh in around 60 to 105 pound and do the work the women had to do back then before modern conviences, like micowaves, coffee pots, indoor plumbing, gas or electric stoves ect... The men having to spend hours a day on horses, learing to rope, ect... oh, yeah, this is going to be fun to watch! It starts on May 5th here.

Too bad they don't do Mississipian Town 1100 AD, or Pueblo House 1000 AD or something to show how our peoples lived, and all the work involved in the day to day living. Or how about Trail of Tears 1838 or Navajo Long Walk, to give them a taste of what their ancestors did to us?

I really do like some of these shows, but they cut out so much of the actual historical lifestyles. As a historian, that really drives me nuts.

            Frontier house

I saw it the other day.....

Did you get the part when the stagecoach came in and the narrator said... Usually the stagecoach had to have riders escort it becuase of HOSTILE NATIVE AMERICANS!

If your home was being invaded you'd defend it, too.

And when the lady of the ranch started to cry when she said "I feel like I'm back in 1868..I really do"
I don't remember any camera men following people around in 1868....LMAO

If they want it to really be 1868...then you got to include everything going on in Texas in 1868...
It wasn't all preaty yellow roses at this time...

What got me on Frontier house was when the local tribe brought them deer meat because Natives are the only ones allowed to hunt now. It's been over a hundred years and we're still saving their @sses!

PBS sometimes shows on its mystery series a Navjavo police show starring Wes Studi and Adam Beach. I find it interesting because it has Native stars and stories. It also talks about healing and spirits.

I'll have to look for the police show. I know this most of the people on the shows couldn't surive on todays rez's let alone how our people lived back in the old days or on the Trail of Tears!
Our youngest daughter is hooked on the PBS/BBC British Comedies. I like the travel shows also. Guess you can tell we don't have cable out where we live. lol

Being in the mountains without cable, we couldn't be any channels. We copy the DVD's from American Mystery which we get from NetFlix. Look under Native American and they'll come up.

Saw last nights episode, it's a little better but they made the Indians look bad. Tonight is the last two parts. They're showing it two parts at a time here.

                              Hello all…
I had come across this forum roughly around 3 years ago or thereabouts and periodically read the odd thread or two out of curiosity.

I am interested how you all felt about the gun control debate that has ensued after the Sandy Hook massacre. It seems to be getting more and more heated every day with the nation equally divided between gun owners who are vehemently opposed to any sort of regulation and those who are calling for new...

Kids hit 4 of our parks/schools this weekend. At one place they took bolt cutters and cut the fence apart. Then put up boards so they could skateboard. Hello...where were the parents when their kids were gone that long?...
