I think it depends on who and what age the person is. When I ask my elderly mother in law that question, I get to hear some pretty gruesome details of illness, and trip to the bathroom, and all sorts of odd stuff. Not for the faint of heart details either. I'm sorta guarded, but only with strangers, and when appropriate. You shouldn't go around literally telling everyone your personal business, it usually backfires.

If the conversation points to mindless jibberish, then
"Well.... you know how it is..." works just fine.

If I am in a bad mood, "I am still on this side of the dirt"

All other situations require, "I am gettin by, day by day"

I believe in something I want to believe, not what someone wants me to believe.

I usually say keeping up, and how are you doing?

What do you mean it usually back fires?

I think I know where you are coming from.....

If they ask and your being honest, then they should understand good or bad...

            And leave it at that...

But, I understand not everyone is open minded or compasionate...

Then it is better said to lie then be honest at times....
            or just ignore the question.

I always answer with a silly comment

                Example:
" I'm still thinking about it"
                " I'm not quite sure"

you know that kind of thing
