    The problem

You see that is where the problem is. People thinking with a European ideaolgy. Why is it that non-native people have to seperate spirituality from every thing. If your are spiritual, everything you do is evaluated on that basis. You should be thet same wheather your are in Church, the circle or the gutter.
Too many people do things for just show, not becasue it is truly the way they are.

I attend drum practice every Sunday, and when and if there is a powwow, I'm over there praying through song and dance. Church is for you crazy christians, so if your going to come on here an preach, your sadly mistaken. I'm a proud native woman, and I love and believe in the creator and all it has to offer to me and my family. I do not find ANYTHING for my in christianity or the bible.

Powwow............. . Spirituality is within our hearts and beliefs so we don't need a place of worship to go to because its always with us. Our family is more from the traditional side so we keep what we have and keep teaching it to the young. Powwowing is just fun and its really helped the lil one with discipline, respect, and honor. But i'd take powwow over preachers any day..........LOL

um.....I mean really.....how are church and pow wows even similar. Pow wow is not a religion.......(as hobbyists everywhere faint). *L* now...church vs. NAC; that would be a viable discussion.

Wow, I feel bad for you. Someone obviously taught you that spirituality is hateful. The spirituality that my family teaches and enjoys is full of respect and dignity, not hate and disrespect. You do to Christians exactly what they did to our people for years and years....you bought into the Eurocentric way of thinking, that ONLY one way is good and right, and that people who believe differently are "crazy" or somehow bad. You might want to think long and hard about this....all it does it make you look very disrespectful and, dare I say it, WHITE.

I think this entire thread is wrong, anyway. For many people, there is no distinction, as their spirituality goes with them no matter where they go, no matter what they believe. If nobody respects what people feel in their heart,to who, and when they pray, then what are we fighting for our identity for? We are no better than the white missionaries who came, and the settlers who killed...all in the name of their spiritual beliefs. I know traditional people as well as Christians who give each other respect, because they know that what is in their heart is real and pure. Anymore these days, it's hard to get people to believe strong enough in ANYTHING, and so we see our youth falling into really bad lives. If they had something ANYTHING to hang on to, things would turn around.
It's not a good thing when we lose young people....we should be trying to reel them in anyway we can.

Native Christians are NOT non-native..which is the common misconception. As the post I quoted above, it shows how sometimes beliefs can be corrupted, and how Natives can be turned against each other....hmmm....looks like a sell out to me.....

Thank you for letting me speak.

oh i am so in the mood for this thread. i do not think this is funny in the least and it seems that at least two of you think this is some sort of joke. I think that the question posed by you T.A.L. was not posted with a good heart it was meant to be condesending, and I think with the intention to cause some kind of fight between members. I also think that for some reason Lisa thinks this is a joke as well; funny even helping to instigate, with all of her "look what you did" it all seems very childish really. spirituality is a very private thing that if people do share is not to be handled lightly. it is really none of your buisiness to pose such a question considering the place that it came from. who do you think you are coming on here and saying I was hoping you would say church, the world is my church son not some four walls. I share my spirituality with my people in ceremony dance and prayer, and I see my faith in my childrens eyes. you my friend are a bible pushing moron doing the white mans bidding.

...Too many people have a hard time understanding that NDNS can be Christian,AND STILL BE NDN!!....Maybe you should visit Taos Pueblo sometime, where most of the people There are Christian(Catholic),and still manage to keep their traditional ceremonies intact, and many times, especially during the Christmas Holiday, they perform their tribal dances AFTER CHURCH!!....In many churches on reservations across the U.S.,the prayers and hymns are all done in a Native language(seen alot of that here in the East),so IT IS possible to be both, honor and respect both, but remember, whatever religion you choose to follow,it doesn't change the fact that you are a Native American, and that the ancient, yet significant, ways of OUR respected ancestors should never be forgotten.AH-HO....keep smilin'1

I'm far from being white, maybe you are calling the kettle black or something, you just did and said what you were supposedly preaching to me about. Spirituality is in my every day life, and I only made it known that the christianity and the bible "does NOT" do anything for me and my family. I was raised that way, so I know what I'm talking about. For one, many of my extended family are christians on both sides of my family. If I refer to you christians as crazy, it's just off the cuff. Just as when some christians refer to us traditional practicing folks as savages or heathens. Every time a thread comes along such as this one, I'm leary about the intentions of the person who started the thread. As you can see, I have no problem standing up for what I believe in, and I do have have my own beliefs and what works for me. Some one accusing me of being or acting white is funny, especially since you don't know me and at the same time it's sad that so many native people are blind to the christian church and it's bible. I'm happy for those that find spirituality in whatever they practice, and it's not on me to talk them out of it, so to speak. As in my own family; they practice christianity, and I practice my native ways and that is that.

As the end of the 2007 powwow season approaches, we can look back at a year in powwows.

One observation that I have noticed is the general decline in attendance this year. This is from my personal observation and from my family and friends who have also noticed a decline in attendance...
