Native baby names and their meanings

hey guy though i'm not expecting, i have been facinated by baby name, and have been looking for that perfect one for my possible children.

i have a rather hard time finding native american names for them, and would love to hear what you segest, so i was hoping we could post tem up here, the criteria is :

name> gender> what tribe(if known)> meaning

maybe you'll be able to help me find the right name for the future children of mine and others up here

I suggest you find a name from your own tribal language. I don't think it's appropriate to name your child with a name not from your tribe. That's weird. Like denying your own....

And if you arent Native....too bad.....

well, flying raven is native except the adoption papers were lost or something like that. a whole generation of lost indians, how can that happen?

well what i'm asking is for everybody, strickly for me, powhatan and cherokee names

but i was thinking of having the names so that those can com eand look to see if they can find a good baby name from their tribe. its more for everybodies use and not just my own, currently the names i have selected are from REALLY old european names, like Rhiannon, and Hiraed.... which have great meanings but only encompas a very small part of my ethnic background

then you should be visiting these people in person. nobody will give you names over the internet unless they are vultures and they'll want something in return so be careful on what you ask for.

My children have traditional names, their Aunties helped. Thats how children get real NDN names. So when you have these possible children, gather the Aunties around you at the birth & the name will come.

Those are beautiful names. And thanks for your sentiment, buy my children were named according to my customs.

ahh okay, that i can understand to, i know i will have my family, and my adopted sister and my closets friends there, i think part of it islike doing like my half brother (my dad side, he isn't native and neither is any side of that family) he close out the name ahead of time, but insisted it be something other then german, so my nephew is Jacob Cole, i know i helped in naming my neice who is native(she is my adopted sisters child) she is named after my sisters best friend who lives in Japan, but we all said we should shorten the first name from Hikari to Kari, from a name meaning light, to one that mean a constant and truthful, a provider(or somthing close to it, i have the meaning writen out on a paper) and her middle name is Lynn, so fully Kari Lynn
i also have nephews Andrew, Nolan, Aithen James(AJ)
and a neice named Dakota and a God daughter by the name of Abigail

And what's wrong with naming your kid, "Flying Raven"?

There's lots of peeps around here that name their kids "English" ndn names. Of course you have to be REAL Indian to pull it off. No offense anyone!
