  • What kind of food do you think should be served at powwows?

Although I've never been to a powwow that didn't have frybread, it's the only NA food that I've ever seen there
(although, granted, I've only been to 3 powwows before).
None of the other foods or beverages that I've seen at one were Native, or even nourishing.
It was mostly just hotdogs, natchoes, candy, and soda.
I'd like to be able to buy foods like Prickly Pear Cactus fruit, Buffalo meat burgers, and foods made from corn, pumpkin, beans, avacados, and squash, instead.
It'd also be nice to be able to find somthing to drink there besides soda.
Mexican-style hot coco, or some kind of fruit juice made from indigionious fruit would be nice.
    What do you guys think?
I'm not responsible for my actions, I just do what the voices tell me to do.

        Hey again, Bo!

We always take our own food too.

I can't see avocados being too popular.

Well, most of the ones that I go to have the Buffalo Burgers, frybread and things like that there. So I really don't know.

And free food is always the best.LOL

I have an Uncle who's a food vendor (So I get free food all the time.LOL), now he makes Sweet Potatoe fries with butter and cinnamon and sugar on them, that's more of a southern food, I think. But they are good.

Up this way, in Michigan and Ontario, I always look forward to whitefish, and smoked salmon, or Walleye from the Glakes...yummm and Wild rice...and cornsoup, but not always available.
At KBIC in Keweenaw bay, they had a world class catered dinner! about3 or 4 main courses, deserts, lots of goodies...it was as good or better than many fancy restaurants! So Michigan has some great food at some of the powwows!

                    good food.

                    free food

Powwows I go to got lots a tradish foods, and a lot of mainstream food comes from tradish foods...at least thats how I justify my love of french fries. But serious elk burgers, catfish, strawberry juice, sweet pataoes (not a big fan) corn soup it's all there. I think sometimes people are looking for something real exotic. But people forget they eat NDN food all the time, like at thanksgiving (Turkey, pumpkin, potatoes, carrots, squash with maple syrup), or even the movies (popcorn) sure there is stuff most don't eat but there are lots people are eatin everyday.

Unfortunatly, not much of that was there.

                          Hey again, Nel!

Well as a matter of fact, I brought my own .
I stopped off at a local place on the way there, and ordered a large lemonade to go.
They're the only place that I know who make their own lemonade.
                          That' right; fresh lemonade.
Made with nothing but lemons & some sugar.
So I didn't have to buy my own at the powwow.

Some powwows have the lemonade guy. I like it cuz I can take my own Splenda and have it low-carb.

Powwows in the East are very different for what I am used to out West. The last couple of powwows I've been to in Pennsylvania had a fire in the center of the arena that they kept burning all weekend. There was even a member of the powwow staff called the "fire keeper." I asked around about...

Are you handicapped or a caretaker for someone who is?

Do the powwows you go to make adequate provisions for the handicapped?

Are most powwows financially able to provide handicapped accommodations?

                                by trob226
If you are OK with Boy Scouts and hobbyists powwowing, do you think they ought to try to be authentic with their outfits and dancing, or do you think they should try to keep themselves distinct? I don't mean Scouts should dance in their uniforms or hobbs in 3-piece suits (though that would be interesting),...

Many state tourism bureaus are wanting to include Indian powwows in their calendar of events. This would mean non Indian tourists are officially welcomed to attend the listed powwows.

Sometimes this is a win-win situation for the larger "mega powwows." These mega powwows actually...
