Futuristic predictions

Today is 7/8/09, a sequential date that won't occur for another 1000 years.

By July 8, 3009 or the next 7/8/09, where do you think Indian people will be?

Will there be powwows that would be recognizable to us today?

Will Indigenous cultures have breeded ourselves out of any substantial individual blood quantums?

Will all North American indigenous languages be a thing of the past except for recordings and text?

Will your great, grand children x 30 generations, know any cultural traditions as we know them today?

Will the apocolypse have occured?

I would hope there will still be natives around. But at the alarming death rate of the native population, it might not be likely. I think in 3009 everyone will just be so intermixed we'll all be caramel. *L* Not a bad look though.

Our population at the point of contact (unofficially 1492) in North America was estimated to be between 10 and 75 million (depending on who you ask). By 1900, our numbers were estimated only to be approximately 250,000.

In 1917, our death rate in the U.S. finally caught up with our birth rate. Since then, our numbers are actually growing (while our individual blood quantum from one tribe is actually declining).

According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 4.1 million Americans listed themselves as full or mixed American Indian/Alaskan Native. Meaning self indentification was the criteria used to determine the 4.1 million American Indian/Alaskan Native population count.

I think you're right in your prediction by 3009, "we will all be caramel.

not to go off on a tangent, but there was a really great sci-fi novel written back in '71 by Ursula K. Le Guin called The Lathe of Heaven, I highly recommend it if you've never read it. Anyway, in that book, there's this guy whose dreams turn into reality. A bad therapist gets hold of the main figure in the book and in trying to cure the world's ills, things tend to backfire. So...in the attempt to stop racisim, the man dreams, and the reality is everyone is now gray in color, no differences in anyone then.

Me, I'd just want some levitation mocc's so you don't have to dance in mud after a rain...........

NEways..... Navajo's say, when our language is gone, then our people will die.... So, no, I don't think we will have the same kind of culture. Just the past... kind of like now and 100 years ago....But there will always be decendents. (govt issue and crazies)

I think powwows will look waaaaayyyy different.... I just hope the crowns don't get so tall, that 2 people have to help carry them...

I think that some type of niche native culture will persist but will only be descendants of descendants. I think people will still gravitate towards people that are similar to themselves. Its sad to think about all that the warriors of our pasts fought for nothing...

On a more serious note:

Since American Indian history is not familiar to most people in the United States, I predict history WILL repeat itself.

President Andrew Jackson, in his second annual message said, " It gives me great pleasure to announce to Congress, that the benevolent policy of the government, steadily pursued for nearly thirty years, in relation to the removal of the Indians beyond white settlements is approaching to a happy consumation. The consequence of the speedy removal will be important to the United States, individual states and to Indians themselves."

As history repeats itself, I predict another United States president, congress and supreme court of the future will do everything in their power to erradicate Indian sovereignty, recognition, reservations, trust responsiblity and culture.

This is why it is important that WE as Indian and First Nations ensure that our history is taught to our children and grand children and that we continue to pursue all that is important to us within our power.

Since it was 7-8-9 I went to our local 789 Casino hoping to win $789, and machines all around me were paying out $700+, but I just dropped $78.90 (actually $80) and then it was 7-9-9.

As for the future a thousand years from now, there probably will be some technological crisis and disasters and the population will have crashed. Luckily some isolated tribes were able to survive, and the world population is rebounding with everyone taking better care of Mother Earth, and having more respect for indigenous western hemisphere peoples.

As a people, within 50 years from now, Canadian natives will no longer be the minority. There gonna have to change treaties n stuff eventually when we are the MAJORITY. We might even see a ndn Prime minister one day. It is a not so far off reality.

Also, goverment is alowing reserves to buy off reserve land. Within 50-75 years, we will have bought up quite a bit of city and rural land.
